Abstract:
A multitone or multicolour decorative, textured coating , on a substrate comprises rigid spheroidal polymeric beads distributed in a random pattern and embedded in a coherent coating film comprising a film-forming polymer. The beads may be coloured and are of a defined size relative to the coherent coating film thickness and there is a contrast in tone or colour between the coherent coating film and at least some of the beads. The coating is obtained on a substrate by applying to the substrate with a roller applicator a coating composition which contains beads of defined size.
Abstract:
An improved process for matching the color characteristics of a paint containing film forming binder, a liquid carrier, colored pigments and flake pigments to the color characteristics of a surface layer that contains flake pigments; the improvement comprises the following: adding to the paint a dispersion comprising a liquid carrier, a dispersing agent and transparent or semitransparent extender pigments or rigid or semirigid organic particles, particularly preferred are hollow glass spheres, in an amount sufficient to match the color characteristics of the surface layer.
Abstract:
A relatively flexible retroreflective laminate sheet construction includes a thermoplastic web (26) a light-receiving and transmitting front side (28) and a reverse side (30) co- extensive with the front side (26), a retroreflective pattern being formed on the reverse side (30). A layer (34) is deposited on the reverse side (30) to cover selected portions of the formed retroreflective pattern with the remaining portions of the formed pattern devoid of the granular material. A layer (32) of back coating material is deposited on the reverse side to overlay the granular material (34). The back coating material contacts the remaining portions of the formed pattern and is fixedly secured thereto, thereby encapsulating the granular material between the reverse side (30) and the back coating layer (32).
Abstract:
This invention is directed to flexible basecoat/clearcoat coating systems which have excellent adherence to metal and plastic substrates and possess superior weathering properties. The clearcoat composition comprises hydroxy-containing urethane modified polyester, made by reacting a urethane modified diol with polyol and diacid component, crosslinkable with amine-aldehydes. The basecoat composition comprises hydroxy-containing urethane modified polyesters, made by reacting hydroxy functional polyester with diisocyanate, crosslinkable with amine-aldehyde and pigment. Optionally, either or both compositions may comprise a high molecular weight linear polyurethane.
Abstract:
Process for manufacturing coloured solid articles, e.g. pharmaceutical tablets, bearing at least one highlighted intagliation, which comprises (1) either (A) applying to said articles a film coating suspension comprising at least one defined optically anisotropic substance and at least one film coating agent, or (B) applying to said articles a suspension comprising at least one defined optically anisotropic substance but no film coating agent, and then (2) spraying the resulting articles with a solvent, and in which both of the steps (1) and (2) are carried out in a conventional film coating apparatus.
Abstract:
A longitudinally striated coating on a strip article is produced by advancing the article past an open side of an otherwise-enclosed trench (26) so that the article surface to be coated closes the open trench side, while delivering concurrent laminar flows of two different liquid coating materials to the trench at least at one locality spaced from the open side of the trench, to keep the trench completely filled and to deposit a layer of coating material on the moving surface of the article. Liquid circulation in the trench caused by the motion of the article surface so distributes the two coating materials along the trench that the applied coating layer is constituted of alternating longitudinal striations of the two materials. With delivery of concurrent flows of the two coating materials at each of plural localities spaced along the trench, positional and other variations of the striations can be achieved by varying the relative total flows delivered at different ones of these localities, for example to create a simulated woodgrain pattern.
