    Abstract: A nutritious vegetable seed solubles binder for animal feed blocks. The subject vegetable seed solubles contain about 80% by weight carbohydrate and up to about 24% by weight protein on a dry substance basis. The new binder may be used as a complete or partial replacement for cane molasses as a binder in animal feed blocks, including those such as molasses/salt blocks, medicated feed blocks and high protein feed blocks. The subject vegetable seed solubles may also be combined with soybean hulls, bagasse or such similar material to make an ingredient which is then used to make animal feed blocks.

    Abstract: Large diameter legume starch granules including starches derived from yellow field pea, Pisum sativum (var) and faba bean, Vicia faba L. (Leguminosae) which have been treated to remove protein and fiber, and to improve color are used to replace scarce arrowroot starch granules as a protective stilt material in microencapsulated coatings, including carbonless copy paper. The "stilt" material is used to prevent premature rupture of the microcapsules and early release of the microencapsulated materials. It has been discovered that the natural granule size, and other granule properties of the yellow field pea and faba bean starches are ideally suited to replace arrowroot starch granules as a protective material when the naturally occurring protein and fiber have been removed, and the color improved. In certain coating processes in which the temperature at the coated surface exceeds the normal pasting temperature of these starch granules, the pasting temperature of the granules can be raised by a crosslinking agent, such as epichlorohydrin, phosphorus oxychloride, sodium trimetaphosphate, acrolein, or urea-formaldhyde can be used. Under high alkaline conditions, using phosphorus oxychloride in a stepwise reaction procedure, it is possible to increase the pasting temperature of the starch granules by more than 25.degree.F. These fiber and protein free, large diameter legume starch particles may also be used for other purposes, such as for antioffset powders in lithography, either with or without crosslinking or other derivatization to further improve chemical and physical properties. These starches are also useful as absorbable dusting powders. The large granule starches derived from most varieties of peas and beans can be used in the same manner.

The products are used to coat corona discharge treated polypropylene and unprimed polyethylene.

    Abstract: 1,173,081. Polymer compositions for use in floor polishes. A. E. STALEY MFG. CO. 6 Jan., 1967 [8 April, 1966], No. 936/67. Heading C3P. Compositions suitable for forming alkaline floor polishes comprise (1) a polyvalent metal chelate of an organic acid, said chelate being at least partially soluble in water at the pH at which a floor polish prepared from the composition is to be applied and (2) an aqueous emulsion of an addition copolymer of 2-25% by weight of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and 98-75% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer not containing a free carboxyl group, at least 50% by weight of the carboxyl-free monomer being a hard monomer and said copolymer being non-film forming at room temperature in the absence of polish coalescing agents and plasticizers. Floor polishes can be formed from the above compositions by incorporating therein a levelling agent, e.g. alkali-soluble resins such as shellac, copolymers of maleic anhydride with styrene or methyl (or ethyl) vinyl ether, hydrolysis products of such copolymers and alkyl esters thereof, terpene-maleic anhydride condensation products, rosin adducts of polyesters derived from glycol or glycerol succinates, adipates or maleates, and phenol-formaldehyde condensates. The floor polishes may also include a natural or synthetic wax, and levelling, coalescing or plasticizing agents such as methyl Carbitol (" Carbitol " is a Registered Trade Mark), tributoxyethyl phosphate, 2-pyrrolidone and fluorinated hydrocarbons. The metal chelate (1) may be derived from Zn, Al, Ti, Zr, Ba, Ca, Mg, Sr, Pb, Co, Cr, Cu or Cd and from acids such as nitrilotriacetic acid, N-polycarboxylic acids of ethylene- or propylene-diamine which may also contain N-hydroxyphenyl or N-hydroxy-ethyl groups, diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid, diaminocyclohexane-tetraacetic acid and gluconic acid; the chelates may also include some alkali metal cations. The acid monomer component of copolymer (2) may be acrylic, methacrylic, ethylacrylic or itaconic acid, or monobutyl itaconate; suitable hard monomers (their homopolymers have brittle points above 20‹ C.) include styrene, vinyltoluene, 2,5-dichlorostyrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, tbutyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl acrylate, dimethyl itaconate and dimethyl maleate; the remaining component of the copolymer, i.e. soft monomer, may be, e.g., a primary or secondary alkyl (up to 8 C atoms) acrylate or a primary or secondary alkyl (4-12 C atoms) methacrylate. The copolymers are prepared from the monomers by emulsion polymerization in conventional manner, and the emulsion products can be neutralized with a volatile base and used to formulate the compositions of the invention. In examples, the copolymers used are 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/styrene/methyl methacrvlate/ methacrylic acid copolymer and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate / styrene / acrylonitrile / methacrylic acid copolymer.

    Abstract: A water-absorbent starch product is made by a method in which an aqueous dispersion of starch, water, free-radical initiator and ethylenically unsaturated monomer, which monomer consists essentially of monomer having a boiling point of at least 100 DEG C, is simultaneously polymerised and dried at a temperature above 100 DEG C to provide a dry, water-absorbent starch product or a precursor thereof. Effective water-absorbent starch products, essentially free from water-soluble salts and free-radical initiator contaminants and containing a high level of functional water attractant groups, may be directly manufactured without the need for further refining or chemical modification.

    Abstract: Water-soluble protein hydrolyzates and high-amylose starches provide an improved whipping system for aerated confections such as nougats, grained marshmallow, etc. The total whipping agent and sweetening agent requirements may be sterilized and aerated to a specific gravity of 0.75 or less. The high-amylose starches and protein hydrolyzates are film-formers and provide a supportive matrix for the aerated confections. The aerated confection permits the use of a broad range of sweetening agents without necessarily relying upon crystallized sugars for textural properties. High, moisture-containing, aerated confections with improved stability against moisture-loss may be obtained by substituting crystallizable sugars (e.g. sucrose) with sweetening agents which have a higher degree of humectancy.

    Abstract: Improved pullulanase yields are achieved by incubating culture mediums containing pullulanase producing mutants of the Klebsiella genus. The mutants generally produce approximately equivalent amounts of extracellular and superficially bound pullulanase in an easily recoverable and usable form. Optimum pullulanase production is achieved when amylopectin is used as the sole carbohydrate source. Conventional pullulanase inducers such as maltose, maltotriose and/or pullulan repress the mutant strains capacity to produce pullulanase. The mutants are capable of elaborating pullulanase in a culture media containing dextrose as the sole carbohydrate source.
