Abstract:
A glassy metal alloy consists essentially of the formula Coa Feb Nic Md Be Sif Cg, where M is selected from molybdenum and chromium and "a", "b", "c", "d", "e", "f" and "g" are in atom percent, "a" ranges from about 40 to about 43, "b" ranges from about 35 to about 42 and "c" ranges from 0 to about 5, "d" ranges from 0 to about 3, "e" ranges from about 10 to about 25, "f" ranges from 0 to about 15 and "g" ranges from 0 to about 2. The alloy can be cast by rapid solidification into ribbon, annealed to enhance magnetic properties thereof, and formed into a marker that is especially suited for use in magneto-mechanically actuated article surveillance systems. Advantageously, the marker is characterized by relatively linear magnetization response in the frequency regime wherein harmonic marker systems operate magnetically. Voltage amplitudes detected for the marker are high, and interference between surveillance systems based on mechanical resonance and harmonic re-radiance is virtually eliminated.

Abstract:
An accelerometer (3) is of the type in which a paddle (6) is suspended from a support (4) so that the paddle (6) is displaceable with respect to the support (4). A suspension arrangement for the paddle includes a pair of compliant beams having longitudinal axes (19a, 21a) that are substantially orthogonal to each other so that the beams provide compliant isolation to internal stresses while being rigid to external loading forces.
Abstract:
A filter device and technique are described which rely on absorption rather than adsorption for the removal of gas phase contaminants. A filter media (49) is composed of wicking fibers which are impregnated with any of a variety of liquid phase absorbing systems made from the combination of a carrier liquid and soluble complexing/degrading agent or agents. The wicking fibers may be connected to an external reservoir (37) which can be used to supply fresh absorbing fluid to the filter media giving them a potentially inexhaustible capacity. The filter media may be made from any of a variety of fibers which can rapidly transport a liquid phase by the nature of either their geometry or their chemical composition. Geometries may include multilobal cross-sectional configurations, porous hollow fibers, porous or striated fibers or tightly bundled microfibers, all of which exhibit the property of wicking fluid from an external source.
Abstract:
A curable resin blend including a multifunctional phenolic cyanate/phenolic triazine copolymer, and an epoxy resin, and articles manufactured therefrom is disclosed. The cured resin blend possesses a high glass transition temperature, excellent mechanical properties such as flexural strength, elongation, flexural modulus, compressive strength and compressive modulus, as well as a low moisture absorption. The cured blend is suitable for making laminates, coatings, composites, and molds such as via resin transfer molding, compression molding, and the like.

An energy absorbing seat belt retractor comprising: a frame (22); a spool (24) rotatably mounted relatively to the frame including a lock wheel (71) having a plurality of lock teeth associated therewith and adapted to receive a seat belt thereabout; a lock pawl (77) for engaging the spool upon sensing a one of a vehicle deceleration and seat belt extraction above certain determinable levels; and movable nut (90) located in the spool and for prohibiting relative movement between the lock wheel and spool below a threshold input force level generated in part by occupant load on the seat belt and for generating a controlled energy dissipating reaction force on the seat belt after the input force exceeds the threshold level to permit a control rotation of the spool and the controlled pay out of the seat belt from the spool.

(8S)-8-fluoroerythromycins are prepared by reacting 8,9-anhydroerythromycin 6,9-hemiacetals or an N-oxide thereof with a carboxylic acid and an N-F fluorinating agent. The anhydro starting material may be prepared in situ from erythromycins or an N-oxide derivative thereof. The (8S)-8-fluoroerythromycin products are useful antibacterial agents.
Abstract:
An active imaging system for viewing targets with a high degree of range resolution of approximately one foot. The imaging system utilizes a laser pulse which passes through an electro-optical pulse slicer which creates a sharp leading edge and/or a sharp falling edge on the laser pulse. The laser pulse travels to the target under observation, illuminates and reflects off of the target and returns to a camera. A target is viewed only during the time all or a portion of the returning laser pulse overlaps the time the camera shutter gate is open. The imaging system is particularly suited for determining depth information about a target by varying the time relationship when the returning laser pulse is received by the camera.
