Abstract: Universal rotary actuators (URAs) and door assemblies having the URAs are disclosed. In some embodiments, the URA includes a motor, a worm gear driven by the motor, a worm wheel having teeth that mesh with threads of the worm gear, a pinion gear attached to the worm wheel, drive gear rotatably connected to the pinion gear, an output shaft attached to the drive gear, and a controller assembly disposed between the drive gear and the motor, the controller selectively controlling direction and speed of the motor. In some embodiments, the URA additionally includes a quick release assembly that moves the pinion gear between an engaged position in which the pinion gear is rotatably connected to the drive gear and a disengaged position in which the pinion gear is not rotatably connected to the drive gear.

Abstract: A contact-minimizing door opening and closing system for a door has a handle including a shaft with an endplate disposed on the shaft opposite the handle and a latch bolt including a pin positioned to contact the endplate. The pin prevents movement of the handle when the latch bolt is extended from a lock housing, and allows movement of the handle when the latch bolt is retracted into the lock housing. An engaging and disengaging mechanism couples the handle to a locking pin such that movement of the handle is configured to operate the engaging and disengaging mechanism to lock the door.

A drive motor is located within the housing and is configured to selectively move a lock assembly between a locked position preventing movement of the bolt and an unlocked position allowing movement of the bolt. A controller is in electrical communication with the drive motor and is configured to direct the actuator lock assembly between the locked position and the unlocked position. A force sensor is in electrical communication with the controller configured to measured when a force exceeds a predetermined threshold.
