A control packet is only sent with a retransmission of a data packet where the previously transmitted data packet is not completely received.     Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing orthogonal spot beams (14a, 14b), sectors (16a, 16b), and picocells (18). The transmissions can be made orthogonal by using orthogonal auxiliary pilots and different Walsh traffic channels in adjacent areas. In accordance with the IS-95 standard, the pilot signal is covered with the 64-chip Walsh sequence zero. The 64-chip all zeros Walsh sequence can be designated as P and the 64-chip all one sequence can be designated as M. In the present invention, additional pilot signals can be provided by concatenating 64-chip all zeros P and all ones M sequences. Thus, for two pilot signals, pilot Walsh sequences of PP and PM can be used. For four pilot signals, pilot Walsh sequences of PPPP, PMPM, PPMM, and PMMP can be used. The present invention can be extended such that any required number of pilot Walsh sequences can be generated by substituting each bit in an K-bit Walsh sequence with the 64-chip all zeros P or all ones M sequence depending on the value of that bit.

    Abstract: Techniques for performing duplicate detection and re-ordering for a HARQ transmission are described. For duplicate detection, a receiver determines whether a decoded packet x for an ARQ channel y is a duplicate packet based on packet x and a prior decoded packet for ARQ channel y. For re-ordering, the receiver determines whether an earlier packet is still pending on any other ARQ channel based on prior decoded packets for the ARQ channels and forwards packet x only if there are no pending earlier packets. There are no pending earlier packets on another ARQ channel z if (1) a decoded packet was received on ARQ channel z at a designated time or later or (2) a decoded packet was not received on ARQ channel z within a time window from current time.

A voice signal is transmitted at a dynamically-adjusted voice transmit power capped at a maximum voice transmit power limit. Concurrently, data bursts are transmitted on top of the voice signal. Data noise is inserted between the data bursts transmissions. The data burst and inserted data noise are transmitted at a dynamically-adjusted data transmit power based on the voice transmit power to restrict the rate of change of the data transmit power until a maximum data transmit power limit is reached.
