Abstract:
Epoxy laminates incorporate up to 20 wt.% talc particles, particularly pure Montana platy talc particles having a maximum particle size of about 40 mu m providing improved drilling performance, reduced dust formation, and improved Z-direction CTE, particularly when the epoxy resin has a Tg of about 150 DEG C or higher. The talc is selected from those which do not significantly reduce the electrical strength of the laminate relative to those which contain no talc particles. Characteristically, the talcs will have less than 5 wt.% impurities and less than 0.01 wt.% (100 wt.ppm) water extractable anions.

The present invention provides an improved process for the recovery of caprolactam from polycaprolactam processing waste. The present process for depolymerizing polycaprolactam waste to form caprolactam comprises the step of: in the absence of added catalyst, contacting the polycaprolactam waste with superheated steam at a temperature of about 250 DEG C to about 400 DEG C and at a pressure within the range of about 1.5 atm to about 100 atm and substantially less than the saturated vapor pressure of water at the temperature wherein a caprolactam-containing vapor stream is formed. The formed caprolactam may then be used in the production of engineered resins and fibers.

The invention provides a system for passive measurement of atmospheric temperature using a passive direction detector for detecting the energy of a narrow wavelength band emanating from a volume of atmospheric gas. The resulting signal can be associated with an effective temperature. The effective temperature can be associated with an effective range. The system generates a temperature map which can determine, at predetermined time intervals, atmospheric temperatures in an azimuth plane associated with a predefined range from the detector. The temperature map can then be used to calculate temperature gradients that in turn can be used to compute the vertical wind vector difference and to determine the presence of clear air turbulence.

A spark plug (11) having a center conductive path (21) with a cylindrical body having a tip (33, 51, 77) at one end and a terminal (23) near the other end has an insulator (41, 45) radially surrounding the center electrode and a substantially cylindrical body with at least first and second diameter sections separated by a shoulder (29). A ground shield (37) surrounds the insulator first diameter section and including near one end a frustoconical section (31) juxtaposed with the insulator shoulder. There is a ground electrode (55, 57, 73) near the other end having a portion thereof (53, 75) aligned with the center electrode tip to form a spark gap. An annular retainer (59) surrounds the insulator second diameter section and including a threaded portion (61) threadedly engaging the threaded portion (17) of a generally cylindrical opening in the head of an internal combustion engine. The retainer includes a frustoconical portion (63) overlapping the ground shield frustoconical section and juxtaposed insulator shoulder securing the ground shield and retainer together with the insulator captured therebetween. The annular retainer has a sidewall thickness in the region of the threaded portion which is substantially greater than the sidewall thickness in the region overlapping the ground shield.
Abstract:
A chromium/refractory metal alloy deposited thin film conductor (14) for use in high temperature semiconductor integrated circuit electronics suitable for operating temperatures as high as 400 DEG C. The thin film conductor (14) can be formed from a chromium tungsten alloy layer deposited on an integrated circuit surface (12). The chromium tungsten layer is then etched to form the desired conductor (10) pattern. The deposited chromium tungsten thin film conductor (10) is then heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen containing some water vapor, causing some of the chromium to diffuse to the surface and oxidize. This produces an excellent conformal passivating film (11) of Cr2O3. This also produces excellent adhesion to SiO2 and Si3N4. Further, the Cr enhances the surface mobility of sputter deposited refractory metal atoms yielding large, nonfibrous grains which enhance conformal step coverage and reduces electromigration.

Abstract:
This invention relates to heat exchangers and a method for manufacturing heat exchangers constructed of a plurality of carbon/carbon plates disposed in a substantial parallel stacked relationship and spaced from each other by carbon/carbon fins bonded to and between adjacent plates. The carbon/carbon plates and fins of the heat exchanger are specially constructed and processed to maximize heat transfer between adjacent passageways formed by the plates and the fluids flowing in these passageways.

A backlight for use in a flat panel display backlight consists of three components, a collimating means (22), optically coupled to a waveguide suitable for transmitting light, which collimates white light and directs the light at an angle to the normal (perpendicular) direction to the surface of the flat panel display (48), diffraction means (40) that extend across the entire display between the collimating means and the flat panel, which angularly separates the white light into red, green and blue components, and light directing means (44), also extending across the entire display between the diffraction means and the flat panel display, for focusing the red, green and blue light components onto the individual red, green and blue color subpixels of the LCD in an aligned fashion.

The invention provides novel thermosetting acrylic compositions, optical films, a process for making such films, and articles of manufacture produced therefrom. The invention is directed to the use of such an optical film as a substrate for flate panel visual displays such as liquid crystal displays. The materials have good optical properties including low birefringence for high contrast and color purity, low haze high transmission for minimal light loss to reduce power consumption and increased brightness. The films have a high degree of flatness, good gas barrier properties, chemical resistance, scratch resistance and dimensional stability. The thermosetting acrylic composition has a mixture of polymerizable acrylates including at least one multifunctional acrylic monomer, at least one multifunctional acrylic oligomer and a bimodal polymerization initiator composition comprising a mixture of either a photopolymerization initiator or a low temperature which initiators polymerization at a temperature of from about 40 DEG C to about 120 DEG C; plus a high temperature thermal polymerization initiator which initiates polymerization or cross-linking of the acrylates and pre-polymerized acrylates at a temperature of from about 180 DEG C or more.
Abstract:
An optical illumination system comprising a waveguide (16) that accepts light generated by a light source (14) and transmits the light via total internal reflection. Attached on one surface of the waveguide is an array of microprisms (28) and a polarizing film (44) disposed between the waveguide (16) and microprisms (28). The polarizing film (44) transmits light polarized in a first polarization state and reflects light polarized in a second polarization state. The reflected light is converted to light of the first polarization state to allow the light to transmit through the polarizing film (44).
