Abstract: Systems, apparatus and methods are provided for measuring moving vehicle information. Moving vehicle information may be measured by a sensor configured to respond to one or more wheels of the moving vehicle, where one or more of the wheels change the characteristic impedance of the sensor at the wheel's contact location. An electrical time domain reflectometry signal processing system which is capable of measuring the change in the impedance of the sensor and converting the impedance change to a signal may be connected operatively to the sensor. A data-processing system receives the signal and extracts the moving vehicle information therefrom.

Abstract: A method is provided herein for detecting trucks moving through a predetermined zone The method includes the comprising the steps of mounting a plurality of above-road electro-acoustic sensor arrays over a predetermined zone of the road. Then electrical signals from said plurality of above-road electro- acoustic sensor arrays are filtered. At least two of the filtered electrical signals are correlated with one another. The results of that correlation i.e., in the immediately-preceding step are integrated over time. Those integrated result of that immediately-preceding step are compared to a predetermined threshold, thereby indicating detection of a motor vehicle when the threshold is exceeded by said integrated result. Then, if said threshold is exceeded by said integrated result, said integrated result is compared to electrical signals from known trucks to determine whether said motor vehicle is a truck.

Abstract: Traffic monitoring and warning methods are provided herein. This invention provides a method of automatically controlling the operation of a traffic-signalling device at an intersection by analyzing data from a specific traffic monitoring and warning system as particularly described in the present specification. The present method comprising the steps of: downloading, into the processor, a set of records including stopping threshold and the speed of a truck which is derived from at least a first set of above-road electro-acoustic sensor arrays which are disposed upstream of intersection; downloading, into the processor, a set of records of a computed speed of the truck downstream from the first set of above-road electro-acoustic sensor arrays but a pre-measured distance upstream of the intersection; matching records, by the processor, of the two speeds of the truck from both the sets of records; computing, by the processor, and from the sets of records, an actual speed of the truck and a computed maximum stopping distance to enable the truck from to stop from the stopping threshold data which had been downloaded into the processor; downloading, into the processor, the actual speed of the truck at a pre- measured distance upstream from intersection; determining, by the processor, whether the truck will be able to stop before the intersection; and from the determination, then sending, by the processor, a signal to the traffic-signalling device to operate the traffic- signalling device to enable the truck to cross the intersection, and to discontinue operating the traffic signalling device when the truck crosses the intersection.
