Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of water-soluble polymers of ethylenically unsaturated anionic monomers produced by radical polymerization in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water-soluble polymer stabilizer are new. Aqueous dispersions of water-soluble polymers of ethylenically unsaturated anionic monomers produced by radical polymerization in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water-soluble polymer stabilizer are new. The stabilizer is a graft copolymer of vinyl acetate and/or vinyl propionate on polyethylene glycol, an alkyl polyalkylene glycol (meth)acrylate/(meth)acrylic acid copolymer, a polyalkylene glycol, a polyalkylene glycol with one or both ends capped with alkyl, carboxy or amino groups, a hydrolyzed vinyl alkyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer (optionally in alkali metal or ammonium salt form), a cationically or anionically modified potato starch, degraded potato starch or maltodextrin. An independent claim is also included for producing aqueous dispersions of water-soluble polymers of ethylenically unsaturated anionic monomers by radical polymerization in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water-soluble polymer stabilizer as above at pH 1-13.
