Abstract: A color-stable superabsorbent polymer having long-term color stability, and methods of manufacturing the polymer, are disclosed. The superabsorbent polymer is prepared using a sulfinic acid derivative, like 2-hydroxy-2-sulfinatoacetic acid, a salt thereof, or a mixture thereof, as the reducing agent in a polymerization initiator system for the preparation of a superabsorbent polymer from monomers. The resulting superabsorbent polymer resists color degradation during periods of extended storage, even at an elevated temperature and humidity.

Abstract: Partículas superabsorbentes reticuladas en sus superficies, que comprenden: (i) 50% a 88% en peso de un polímero superabsorbente, comprendiendo dicho polímero superabsorbente de 0, 001% a 5% en peso de un agente de reticulación de dichas superficies; (ii) 12% a 35% en peso de una arcilla, estando presente dicha arcilla en proximidad a las superficies de las partículas superabsorbentes; y (iii) 0% a 25% en peso de un formador inorgánico de la red, siendo preparadas dichas partículas mediante un método que comprende las etapas de: (a) polimerizar uno o más monómeros capaces de proporcionar un polímero superabsorbente en presencia de un monómero de reticulación interna para formar un hidrogel de polímero superabsorbente; (b) desmenuzar el hidrogel de polímero superabsorbente para formar partículas de hidrogel de polímero superabsorbente; (c) secar las partículas de hidrogel de polímero superabsorbente de la etapa (b) para proporcionar partículas superabsorbentes secas; (d) aplicar a la superficie de las partículas superabsorbentes de la etapa (c) una mezcla que comprende un agente de reticulación de las superficies de tales partículas y una arcilla, para proporcionar partículas de polímero superabsorbente tratadas en sus superficies; y (e) calentar entonces las partículas de polímero superabsorbentes tratadas en sus superficies durante un tiempo suficiente y a una temperatura suficiente para reticular las superficies de las partículas de polímero superabsorbente tratadas en sus superficies y situar la arcilla en proximidad a las superficies de las partículas superabsorbentes reticuladas en tales superficies.

Abstract: Surface-crosslinked superabsorbent polymer (SAP) particles having a clay in the vicinity of the surfaces of the SAP particles a clay are disclosed. The clay is added to SAP particles during surface crosslinking to substantially reduce the generation, and recycling, of SAP fines, and to provide SAP particles having an improved acquisition rate of fluids and an improved permeability of a fluid through the swollen SAP particles. Diaper cores and absorbent articles containing the surface crosslinked SAP particles also are disclosed.

Abstract: Hydrophilic open-celled resilient foams containing melamine-formaldehyde resins, characterized by a droplet absorption rate of less than 5 seconds and an EU standard EN ISO 14184-1 formaldehyde emission of less than 100 mg of formaldehyde/kg of foam, and obtainable by(a) heating an aqueous solution or dispersion each containing at least a melamine-formaldehyde precondensate, an emulsifier, a blowing agent and a curing agent to form a foam and crosslink the precondensate,(b) then conditioning the foam at from 120 to 300° C. for from 1 to 180 minutes to remove volatiles, and(c) treating the foam during the conditioning or thereafter with at least one hydrophilicizer and/or with ozone, a corona discharge or a plasma,are useful in hygiene articles to acquire, distribute and immobilize body fluids.

Abstract: Water-swellable hydrophilic polymers are prepared by neutralization of the acidic hydrogel having a degree of neutralization of 0-40 mol % to an ultimate degree of neutralization of 60-85 mol % by mixing with a neutralizing agent in a mincer comprising a system of screw, rotating blade, restricted flow zone and breaker plate, whereinthe mincer has a power output of from 1000 to 6000 Wh/m3the hydrogel passes through a zone having-an energy dissipation density of from 400 to 800 W/1 of mixing volumethe average residence time of the hydrogel in the mincer is from 5 to 30 secondsthe breaker plate has an open area of from 20 to 40%.
