Abstract: In the prodn. of aminopropyl ethers (I) of polyhydric alcohols (II) by addn. of excess CH2:CHCN to (II) in the presence of alkaline catalysts (III) and hydrogenation of the cyanoethyl ether (IV) formed, after removing the excess CH2:CHCN, the mixt. is treated with NH3 before hydrogenation. (I) are used in the prodn. of synthetic resins by reaction with epoxides or dicarboxylic acids. Under suitable conditions, NH3 reacts with CH2:CHCN without causing aminolysis of (IV). On hydrogeneration, the aminonitriles are converted mainly to H2N(CH2)3 NH2, which is a valuable by-prod. Better results are obtd. if a small amt. of an aprotic polar solvent is added before the NH3. E.g. HO(CH2)4OH was reacted with CH2:CHCN is the presence of C6H5CH2NMe3OH, treated with N-methylpyrrolidone and NH3 and hydrogenated. No loss of catalytic activity or increase in the yield of prods. with a higher b.pt. than H2N(CH2)3O(CH2)4O(CH2)3NH2 occurred in 5 months prodn.

Abstract: New 3-methyl-pentan-1,5-diol-bis(chlorocarbonate) is of formula Cl-CO-O-(CH2)2-CH(CH3)-(CH2)2-O-CO-Cl (I). (I) is prepd. by phosgenation of 3-methyl-p ntan-1, 5-diol. In an example, 472 pts. (4 mol equivs.) 3-methyl-pentan-1,5-diol were reacted with 1000 pts. phosgene (10 mol equivs.) at 12-16 degrees C in a rotating reactor. The reaction mixt. contg. 20% COCl2, was then allowed to flow to a post-reaction zone where it was degassed at 70 degrees C/70 mbars.

Abstract: Alkoxypropylamines are prepd. by the catalytic hydrogenation of an alkoxynitrile in the presence of free phosphoric acid (0.1-10 wt. %). The nitrile is obtd. by the reaction of an alcohol with acrylonitrile, in the presence of a base as catalyst. The base is finally neutralised. Pref. the alcohol is a divalent 2-8C straight-chain alcohol e.g. 1,6-hexane diol, and the base is neutralised by phosphoric acid. Hydrogenation occurs at pref. 60-90 degrees C, 100-300 atm. H2 in the presence of 0.2-1.0% H3PO4 to give an improved yield (>95%) and purity (>99%) of prod. The amines can be used as precursors in the mfre. of plastics.

Abstract: The parent patent describes the prepn. of N-(2-cyanoethyl) cyclohexylamine or its ring alkyl substd. derivs. by reaction of cyclohexylamine or alkylcyclohexylamine with acrylonitrile at high temp. in the presence of catalytic quantities of acetic acid. The modification of the above process produces bis-(2-cyanoethyl)-ethylenediamine (I) from ethylenediamine. (I) is used to prepare bis-(3-aminopropyl)-ethylenediamine, an important paper-making chemical. High yields are obtd. (over 90%) compared with known processes and the reaction may be carried out at low temps.
