Abstract: A self-extinguishing composition consists of (a) a normally solid thermoplastic homopolymer or copolymer of styrene which may be substituted by alkyl groups in the nucleus or side chain and which contains more than 50% by wt. of styrene or the substituted styrene having intimately incorporated therewith (b) an organic bromide having a plurality of bromine atoms attached to the carbon atoms and the bromine atoms constituting more than 40% of the bromide, in such an amount that the composition has a bromine content of 0.1-5%, and (c) 0.01-5% of (a) of a compound of formula where RA and RB are a phenyl radical which may be substituted by at least one C1- 3 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a C1- 4 alkoxy radical, Cl or Br; R1 and R2 are H, Cl, Br, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or cyclohexyl; R3 and R4 are Cl, Br, cyano, nitro, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or phenyl. The (a) polymer may be polystyrene and/or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. Compound (c) may be 2,3-diethyl - 2,3 - diphenylbutane; 2,2,3,3 - tetraphenylbutane or 2,3 - dimethyl - 2,3 - di - p - tolylbutane. The bromide (b) may be hexabromododecane, tris - (2,3 - dibromopropyl)-phosphate or tetrabromoethane. The composition may be made by dissolving the three components in methylene chloride. The composition may also contain a foaming agent, e.g. pentane, and may be formed into a foamed sheet.

Abstract: 1,058,585. Pug-mills. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A. G. Oct. 4, 1963 [Oct. 6, 1962], No. 33298/65. Divided out of 1,058,584. Heading B1C. [Also in Division Fl]. Apparatus for polymerizing ethylene comprises a mixing chamber 1 having at least two inlets 3, a regulatable discharge means 2, and a screw 4 having an axial bore 5 open at the discharge end and communicating with the chamber 1 by means of apertures 6 or the inlet end; in operation part of the materials are recycled through the hollow screw. The apertures 6 may be radial or inclined and may open into the flanks of the screw-thread (see Fig. 2, not shown); they may be circular, oval or slotshaped. The apparatus has heating and cooling means (not depicted), and a thermocouple 9, it may discharge to a degassing screw and a granulating apparatus.

Abstract: Linear polyethylene of molecular weight 5,000 to 50,000 is treated in melted form at temperatures between 160 DEG and 280 DEG C., with molecular oxygen or mixtures of nitrogen and oxygen, such as air, whereby polyethylene of branched structure is produced. The linear polyethylene used may be obtained by thermal degradation of a linear polyethylene of higher molecular weight, e.g. by heating linear polyethylene of molecular weight 430,000 at 350 DEG to 420 DEG C. under nitrogen. The products find application as film.

Abstract: 1,228,976. Chlorinating polyethylene. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 28 Aug., 1968 [29 Aug., 1967], No. 41122/68. Heading C3P. Polyethylene is chlorinated in a continuous process in which finely particled polyethylene is treated with chlorine in a chlorohydrocarbon whose boiling point is in the range from 30‹ to 90‹ C., the process comprising continuously introducing a high pressure polyethylene in the form of particles having a diameter of from 2 to 6 mm., a chlorohydrocarbon and chlorine into a reaction zone which contains solid polyethylene and a solution of from 1 to 20% by weight with respect to the solution of chlorinated polyethylene in the chlorohydrocarbon, continuously withdrawing from the reaction zone a fraction of the solution which is equivalent in amount to the amount of constituents being continuously introduced, and isolating chlorinated polyethylene from the solution withdrawn. Suitable chlorohydrocarbons are carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and trichloroethane.
