Abstract: THE POLYMERIZATION OF VINYL CHLORIDE, WITH OR WITHOUT OTHER MONOMERS, IN TWO ZONES, ONLY SMALL AMOUNTS OF VINYL CHLORIDE BEING POLYMERIZED IN THE FIRST ZONE, THE VINYL CHLORIDE BEING SEPARATED FROM THE POLYMER, AND THE PURIFIED VINYL CHLORIDE BEING POLYMERIZED IN THE SECOND ZONE.

Abstract: 1,176,238. Moulding olefin polymer foams. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 27 April, 1967 [28 April, 1968; 23 Aug., 1966], No. 19431/67. Heading B5A. Mouldings of expanded olefin polymers are formed by heating expanded particles of crosslinked crystalline homo- or co-polymers of olefins having two or three carbon atoms in a closed mould from which gases and liquid can excape but from which the expanded particles cannot escape. The particles are preferably compressed by 5-70 degrees volume per cent by moving two opposed mould sides towards the centre of the mould cavity. The polymer must have an X-ray crystallinity greater than 25% at 25‹ C. and may be polyethylene, polypropylene, a copolymer of ethylene and propylene or a copolymer of ethylene with various vinyl compounds especially acrylic esters. It may contain fillers, reinforcements, dyes, flame retardants, lubricants or other polymers and the degree of crosslinking may be increased by irradiation with X-rays or an electron beam. The expanded particles preferably have diameters of between 3 and 40 mm. Heating during the moulding process may be carried out by immersing the mould in a bath of liquid, by passing a heated gas through the mould or by introducing a heated gas into the mould cavity, the pipes being removed before compressing the particles.

Abstract: 1,228,921. Chlorinating ethylene polymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 28 Aug., 1968 [29 Aug., 1967], No. 41123/68. Heading C3P. A chlorinated ethylene polymer is prepared by allowing gaseous chlorine to act on a finely particled compact ethylene polymer which has been obtained by high pressure polymerization and which has an average particle diameter with the range from 200 to 800 microns and a specific surface area of from 70 to 300 cm. 2 /g. in the absence of solvents and suspension agents. Suitable polymers are homopolymers of ethylene or copolymers of ethylene with one or more other singly unsaturated olefins e.g. propylene or n-butene. The ethylene polymer may have a molecular weight of 10,000 to 180,000 and a density of 0À880 to 0.938 g./cm. 3 . The chlorination may be carried out in a fluidized bed, a rotary kiln or a stirred vessel.

Abstract: 1,227,226. Chlorinated polyethylene composition. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. 23 Aug., 1968 [26 Aug., 1967], No. 40437/68. Heading C3P. A moulding material contains 10 to 90% by weight of a chlorinated low-density polyethylene and 90 to 10% by weight of a chlorinated high-density polyethylene, both percentages being with reference to the total content of chlorinated polyethylene. Chlorinated lowdensity polyethylene is prepared by chlorinating a low-density polyethylene in the molecular weight range of 20,000 to 180,000 and of density 0À900 to 0À938 g.cm. 3 , and preferably has a chlorine content of from 5 to 5% by weight of chlorine with reference to the chlorinated polymer. Chrlorinated high-density polyethylene is prepared by chlorinating a highdensity polyethylene in the molecular weight range of 300,000 to 3,000,000 and of density 0À930 to 0À960 g./cm. 3 , and preferably has a chlorine content of 10 to 30% by weight of chlorine with reference to the chlorinated polymer.
