Low molecular weight waxy polyethylene (a molecular weight up to 10,000) is prepared by-polymerizing ethylene at 200-300‹ C. and under a pressure of 1200-2500 atmospheres using a free-radical initiation, wherein the ethylene contains (a) 10-30% by volume of hydrogen or a C 2 -C 4 alkane and (b) 0À5-3% by volume of a C 3 -C 4 alkene. The alkane component (a) may be one or more of ethane, propane, butane and isobutane and (b) may be one or more of propene, butene-1, butene-2 and isobutylene. The initiator, which may be oxygen or dilauroyl peroxide, is perferably used in amounts of 0À5-2 moles per mole of ethylene. In the examples, ethylene containing hydrogen or propane, and propene or isobutylene, is continuously polymerized, the initiator being oxygen or dilauroyl peroxide.

Polyethylene is chlorinated in a continuous process in which finely particled polyethylene is treated with chlorine in a chlorohydrocarbon whose boiling point is in the range from 30‹ to 90‹ C., the process comprising continuously introducing a high pressure polyethylene in the form of particles having a diameter of from 2 to 6 mm., a chlorohydrocarbon and chlorine into a reaction zone which contains solid polyethylene and a solution of from 1 to 20% by weight with respect to the solution of chlorinated polyethylene in the chlorohydrocarbon, continuously withdrawing from the reaction zone a fraction of the solution which is equivalent in amount to the amount of constituents being continuously introduced, and isolating chlorinated polyethylene from the solution withdrawn. Suitable chlorohydrocarbons are carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and trichloroethane.
