Abstract: In a process for producing open-celled rigid foams by reacting a) polyisocyanates with b) compounds containing hydrogen atoms which are reactive toward isocyanates, in the presence of c) water, d) if desired, organic compounds acting as physical blowing agents, e) catalysts, auxiliaries and/or additives, the compounds containing reactive hydrogen atoms used are substances having the structure I: is 0-1 q is 0-15 r is 0-1 s is 0-15 t is 0-1 u is 0-10 v is 0-15 x is 1-5 y is 1-4 or mixtures of 1-3 where r+n NOTEQUAL 0 z is 0-3 zi is 0.1-3 R1 is an aliphatic structure without OH groups based on the structure of polyhydric alcohols, preferably ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, neopentyl glycol, 1,3-butanediol, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolethane, glycerol, pentaerythritol, where these substances can also be used in the esterification as any mixture among one another and R1 can therefore also be a mixture of the corresponding structures, R2 is the radical of a polycarboxylic acid without COOH groups, eg. adipic acid, terephthalic acid, o-phthalic acid, R3 is an alcohol radical like R1.

Abstract: Storage-stable emulsion, used in the manufacture of fine celled hard foamed materials, contains a polyester alcohol propellant of specified formula as emulsifier. Emulsion contains: (a) compounds containing hydrogen atoms reactive towards isocyanates; (b) a polyester alcohol propellant of formula (I) as emulsifier; and (c) usual polyurethane catalysts, auxiliary aids and/or additives. (b) is emulsified in components (b) and (c). m = 0-15; n = 0-1; o = 0-15; p = 0-1; q = 0-15; r = 0-1; s = 0-15; t = 0-1; u = 0-10; v = 0-15; x = 1-5; y = 1-4 or mixtures between 1-3 with r + n is not 0; R1 = aliphatic structure based on the structure of multivalent alcohols, preferably ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol 1,2-propylene glycol, and dipropylene glycol; 1,4-butane diol, 1,6-hexane diol, neopentyl glycol, 1,3-butane diol, trimethylol propane, trimethylol ethane, glycerin, pentaerythrite; R2 = polycarboxylic acid without COOH groups, e.g. adipic acid, terephthalic acid, or o-phthalic acid; and R3 = alcohol as in R1.

Abstract: The production of flameproofed rigid isocyanate-based foam (I) by reacting (a) polyisocyanates and/or modified polyisocyanates with (b) high-mol. wt. compound(s) with at least two reactive hydrogens and optionally (c) low-mol. wt. chain-extenders and/or crosslinkers in presence of (d) fire retardants, (e) water, (f) blowing agents and (g) other additives etc. Component (f) consists of a mixture of (f-1) at least one liquid (at room temperature) hydrocarbon with 5 or more carbon atoms and (f-2) at least one gaseous hydrocarbon with 4 carbon atoms or fewer. Also claimed is a blowing agent mixture for the production of (I), consisting of mixture (f) as above and the carbon dioxide from the isocyanate/water reaction.

Abstract: The production of foam containing polyisocyanate poly-addition products comprises reacting: (a) polyisocyanates; (b) isocyanate-reactive compounds with a molecular weight of 500-8000; and optionally (c) chain extenders and/or crosslinkers with a molecular weight of less than 500, in the presence of: (d) blowing agents; (e) catalysts; and optionally (f) other additives. The blowing agents contain hydrocarbons with 3- or 4-carbon rings, with a b. pt. of 0-75 deg C at 1013 mbar. Also claimed are: (i) isocyanate-reactive components for foam production, containing 5-25 wt.% cyclic hydrocarbons and optionally homogeneously miscible compounds with a b.pt. of between -40 and +100 deg C at 1013 mbar, 0.5-3 wt.% water and 82-94.5 wt.% components (b) and optionally (c); and (ii) foam obtained by the above process.

An Independent claim is also included for a method for the production of (I) by reacting (a) at least difunctional isocyanates with (b) compound(s) with at least 2 NCO-reactive H atoms in presence of (c) catalysts, in which (b) comprise (bi) polyether-polyol(s) with a functionality of more than 2.5 and a mol. wt. of more than 300 (preferably 300-1000) and (bii) polyol(s) with a functionality of 1.7-3 and a mol. wt. of more than 1000, and the reaction is carried out with an isocyanate index of less than 200.

Abstract: Emulsions containing polyether alcohols and polyester alcohols are used in the production of hard foams based on isocyanates to improve the temperature stability of the foams. Temperature-stable hard foams based on isocyanates are produced by reacting (a) polyisocyanates with (b) compounds with at least two hydrogen atoms reactive with isocyanate groups and (c) water in the presence of (d) propellants and optionally catalysts and auxiliary aids and additives. (b) comprises (bi) a polyether alcohol present in an amount of 0.2-80 wt.% and having a functionality of at least 1.5 and an OH number of 10-100 mg KOH/g, and (bii) a polyester alcohol present in an amount of 5-90 wt.%. (c) is present in an amount of maximum 2 wt.%. (d) contains hydrocarbons and/or hydrocarbons containing fluorine in an amount of 5-30 wt.%.
