Abstract: An electron source emits electrons as a function of input signals. The electron source comprises a substrate (1), a matrix of wires having m row wires and n column wires laid on the substrate with an insulator layer interposed therebetween, and a plurality of surface-conduction electron-emitting devices each having a pair of electrodes (5,6) and a thin film (4) including an electron emitting region (3) and arranged between the electrodes. The electron-emitting devices are so arranged as to form a matrix with the electrodes connected to the respective row and column wires. Each pixel unit is irradiated by at least two electron beams emitted from the respective electron emitting regions which are juxtaposed with interleaving the higher potential device electrode therebetween and a gap interval W in the juxtaposing direction of which satisfies equation (1) below: K2 x 2H(Vf/Va) ≥ W/2 ≥ K3 x 2H(Vf/Va) where K2 = 1.25 +/- 5.05, K3 = 0.35 +/- 0.05, H is the distance between the surface-conduction electron-emitting devices and the image-forming member, Vf is the voltage applied to the surface-conduction electron-emitting device and Va is the voltage applied to the image-forming member.

Abstract: In an electron beam apparatus comprising an enclosure in which an electron-emitting device having an electron-emitting region between opposite electrodes is disposed, the electron-emitting device exhibits such a characteristic as that an emission current is uniquely determined with respect to a device voltage. The interior of the enclosure is maintained under an atmosphere effective to prevent structural changes of the electron-emitting device. An image-forming apparatus comprises an enclosure in which an electron source and an image-forming member are disposed, the electron source comprising the above electron-emitting device. An emission current is stable with a very small change in the amount of electrons emitted, a sharp image is produced with high contrast, and gradation control is easily carried out.

Abstract: The invention provides a driving method of an electron beam emitting device comprising a surface conduction type of thin film device having an electron emitting area and a pair of electrodes for passing current through the electron emitting area, wherein a track of the emitted electron beam is varied by varying a value of a voltage applied between said pair of electrodes. The invention also provides a driving method of an image displaying device comprising such an electron beam emitting device and a light-emitting member, which is irradiated with the electron beam from said electron beam emitting device to form a light-emitting image, wherein the track of the emitted electron beam is varied in a corresponding manner to shift a site to be irradiated with the electron beam in said light-emitting member.

Abstract: In an electron source comprising a base plate and an electron emitting element disposed on the base plate, the electron emitting element includes a plurality of electron emitting portions electrically connected in parallel, the electrical connection being made through a thermally cut-off member. After forming the plurality of electron emitting portions, their electron emission characteristics are checked and, for that electron emitting portion on which the electron emission characteristic has been found not normal, the electrical connection is cut off. Alternatively, the electron emitting element includes an electron emitting portion connected to a voltage supply through a thermally cut-off member, and an electron emitting portion forming film which includes a thermally connecting member. In this case, after cutting off the electrical connection in that electron emitting portion on which the electron emission characteristic has been found not normal, the electron emitting portion forming film is connected to the voltage supply for forming another electron emitting portion in the film. With such an electron source and an image forming device using the electron source, a production yield and image quality are improved.
