Abstract: A two-core optical fiber is provided for use in Brillouin distributed fiber sensor applications and systems. The two-core fiber includes a first and second core. Each core is configured to exhibit a Brillouin frequency shift greater than 30 Mhz relative to the other core. Further, each core possesses temperature and strain coefficients that differ from the other core. The cores can be configured to produce Brillouin frequency shift levels of at least 30 Mhz relative to one another. These differences in shift levels may be effected by adjustment of the material compositions, doping concentrations and/or refractive index profiles of each of the cores. These optical fibers may also be used in BOTDR- and BOTDA based sensor systems and arrangements.

Abstract: An optical-fiber-based light source that generates light via third-harmonic (TH) generation is disclosed. The light source includes a pump light source that provides pump light having a fundamental mode of wavelength lambda P . The light source also includes an optical fiber optically coupled to the pump light source. The optical fiber's core refractive index profile has (i) a central region with a refractive index value Delta 1 , (ii) a first annular region immediately surrounding the central region and having a refractive index value Delta 2 , and (iii) a second annular region immediately surrounding the first annular region and having a refractive index value Delta 3 . The optical fiber satisfies the conditions Delta 2 1 and Delta 2 3 , and max{Delta 1 ,Delta 3 }-Delta 2 >1.2%. The pump light produces TH-generated light having a higher-order mode of wavelength lambda TH =(1/3)lambda P and that is outputted at the optical fiber output end. The pump light fundamental mode overlaps the TH-generated-light higher order mode over the length of the optical fiber to provide a conversion efficiency of 1% or greater.

Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core. The relative indexes, the refractive index profiles and the radii of the segments are chosen to provide waveguide fiber properties advantageously used in severe environments, such as, undersea cables. The segmented core waveguide fiber has a negative total dispersion over the operating window of about 1530 nm to 1570 nm, which serves to eliminate soliton formation. The key properties of dispersion zero, cut off wavelength, attenuation, and bend resistance fall within desired ranges. The waveguide also features a low polarization mode dispersion.

Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a relatively large effective area and good bend resistance. The waveguide fiber is characterize d by a segmented core having a central segment (30) and at least one annular segment (32, 34, 36) surrounding the central segment. At least one segment h as a negative relative refractive index where the reference refractive index is taken as the index of the cladding. The total dispersion of the fiber is positive for wavelengths above about 1500 nm, dispersion slope is typically less than about 0.08 ps/nm2-km, and induced attenuation under pin array bend testing is typically less than 5 dB/km.

Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core i n which the central segment is a void (16). The shape and radial extent of the core segments are selected to provide a low dispersion slope together with large effective area and good bend resistance. Embodiments of the refractive index profiles in accord with the invention are shown having two or three annular segments (2, 6, 8) surrounding the central void. The presence of the void provides the benefits of a negative relative index located centrally in the core region without the process difficulties associated with the use of dopants that decrease the refractive index of the waveguide fiber.
