    Abstract: A pigment preparation (I) contains a pigment and/or carbon black and a polymer and/or non-ionic surfactant, preferably cross-linked polyoxyethylene acrylic acid, fatty alcohol polyglycol ether, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, alcohol alkoxylate, alkylphenol glycol ether, lignin sulfonate and/or naphthalenesulfonic acid derivatives. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the preparation of the pigment preparation (I) by freeze drying of the aqueous preparation and optionally communication.

    Abstract: A bitumen/carbon black concentrate (I) contains 1-45 wt.% carbon black (II) and has a Grindometer (RTM) value of less than 50 microns. Concentrates contg. up to 40 wt.% carbon black, e.g. Printex A powder (RTM), were prepd. by mixing bitumen B80 with the powder at 150 deg C. in a LUK 3IInS kneader (RTM). The Grindometer values obtd. (after dilution to 7.5% with more bitumen in a dissolver at 4000 r.p.m.) were less than 10 microns; stirrer speeds of 2000 rm.p.m. or less gave values of above 50 microns. The 7.5% concentrate was mixed with an asphalt compsn. contg. 7.5 wt.% bitumen, 9.98 wt.% filler, 20.4 wt.% sand and 62.6 wt.% grit, to give a final carbon black content of 0.6 wt.%. The prod. had a crack sensitivity (time taken to reach the inflection in the deflection/time curve) of 6300 secs.; this was increased to 11,000 secs. after accelerated weathering (500 hrs. in a Q-U-V appts. (RTM) at 50 deg C. with a 4-hr. moisture/irradiation cycle). (cf. 2900 secs., falling to 2400 secs. after weathering, with 0.6 wt.% pptd. silica instead of carbon black).
