Abstract: The proposed conjugated polymers contain repeating units of formula I, in which the symbols and indices have the following meanings: psi is a group IV element other than carbon; D, E, F and G are identical or different, for example -O- or a chemical bond; U represents (for example) a chemical bond; V can have the same meaning as U or can represent -O-; the groups A are identical or different, and are (for example) H or a C1-C20 hydrocarbon group; T represents (for example) -O- or -CA=CA-, A having the meaning indicated above; K, L, M and Q are identical or different and represent hydrocarbon groups which can contain heteroatoms and are characterized by conjugated electron systems; m and n are identical or different integers 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4. The proposed polymers can be used as electroluminescent materials.

Abstract: Amphiphilic monomers with mixed-chain structures of the formula in which Y denotes -O- or -NH- X denotes a group of the formula -(CH2)n- or -(CH2-O-CH2)n- l denotes an integer from 0 to 10, n denotes an integer from 1 to 10, R1 denotes hydrogen, methyl, chlorine, cyano, fluorine or bromine, R2 denotes C1-C24-alkyl or C1-C24-fluoroalkyl and R3 denotes C8-C24-alkyl or C8-C24-fluoralkyl, with the proviso that the groups R2 and R3 contain a different number of carbon atoms. The monomers are polymerized on their own or together with other comonomers. The polymers obtained are suitable for the preparation of ultra-thin layers on a suitable layer support.

Also claimed are: (i) prepn. of (I) by reacting one or more cpds. of formula (II) with bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene) nickel (O) and a 2,2'-bipyridine in an inert organic solvent (mixt); (ii) electroluminescent materials contg. (I); (iii) electroluminescent devices contg. at least one layer of the material; and (iv) prepn. of (II) by reacting a 4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene deriv. with bromine in an inert organic solvent in the presence of a gp. VIII transition metal on an active carbon carrier.
