Abstract: The invention concerns the use in electroluminescent devices of heterospiro-compounds of formula (I), in which PSI means an element of the fourth main group of the periodic system of elements, with the exception of carbon, and is preferably Sn, Ge or Si, particularly preferably Ge or Si, and K and K , independently of each other, mean conjugated systems. The compounds of formula (I) are distinguished by good solubility in common organic solvents, improved film-forming properties and a considerably reduced tendency towards crystallization.

Abstract: Triptycene derivatives are useful in electroluminescent devices. The use of triptycene derivatives of formula (I) in electroluminescent devices is claimed: K -K = optionally substituted mono- or polycyclic systems which may also contain hetero atoms; X, Y = CR , N, P, As or SiR ; R = H, halogen, pseudohalogen or 1-30 C hydrocarbyl (optionally containing hetero atoms); R = 1-30 C hydrocarbyl (optionally containing hetero atoms). Independent claims are also included for: (a) compounds (I) as such in which at least one of the groups K -K is a fluorophore; (b) electroluminescent devices containing one or more active layers, at least one of which contains one or more triptycene derivatives (I).

Abstract: Poly (4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene-2,7-diyl) derivs. of formula (I) are new (where, R1-R4 = H, 1-22C alkyl (opt. contg. one or more non-adjacent CH2 gps. substd. by O, -COO-, -OOC- and/or phenylene), aryl(oxy) (opt. a substd on the aryl ring with one or more of 1-22C alkyl, 1-22C alkoxy Br, Cl, F, CN and/or NO2)., Br, Cl, F, CN, NO2 or 2-23C carboalkoxy; and n = 10-150). Also claimed are: (i) prepn. of (I) by reacting one or more cpds. of formula (II) with bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene) nickel (O) and a 2,2'-bipyridine in an inert organic solvent (mixt); (ii) electroluminescent materials contg. (I); (iii) electroluminescent devices contg. at least one layer of the material; and (iv) prepn. of (II) by reacting a 4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene deriv. with bromine in an inert organic solvent in the presence of a gp. VIII transition metal on an active carbon carrier.
