    Abstract: A low power gas sensor is provided for detecting one or more gases in a gas sample. The gas sensor includes a sensor for sensing a desired gas and a heater for heating the sensor. During operation, a controller provides power to the heater to heat the sensor to an operating temperature during a first period of time. Once at the operating temperature, the controller may read the sensor to determine a measure of the detected gas in the gas sample. Once a measurement is taken, and to conserve power, the controller removes the power to the heater allowing the heater and sensor to cool to at or near the ambient temperature for a second period of time. The second period of time may be longer than the first period of time, and in some cases, substantially longer. In some embodiments, the sensor and heater may be thermally isolated from some or all of the remainder of the gas sensor, such as the sensor substrate. This may also help reduce the amount of power that is required to heat the heater and sensor to the operating temperature. The gas sensor of the present invention may be ideally suited for battery powered and/or wireless applications.

    Abstract: A thermal sensor structure having one level for an infrared detecting pixel including the sensor associated electronics. The electronics displace a small area thereby having little effect on the fill area of the pixel relative to a level having no pixel electronics. That level has thermally isolation for the substrate through the limited structural attachment to the substrate because of the access vias to the silicon. It has additional isolation because of a pit of removed silicon from the substrate below that one level. The thermal sensor may have an array with a large number of pixels having the one level for the pixels and electronics structure.

    Abstract: Methods for use in fabricating thermal detecting structures include altering contact regions thereof (i.e., exposed surfaces of thermal detecting material) for use in the formation of electrical connection to conductive contacts thereof.     Abstract: Flame detectors and methods of detecting flames are described herein. A flame detector 100 includes an optical element 102 configured to process mid wave infra-red (MWIR) light and long wave infra-red (LWIR) light emitted from an area. A bolometer 104 is configured to detect a flame in the area based on the mid wave infra-red light and long wave infra-red light processed by the optical element 102. The optical element 102 may include a lens 106 and an optical filter 108. The bolometer 104 may include an array 110 of pixels configured to absorb a portion of both the MWIR and LWIR light. The flame detector 100 may include a shutter configured to alternately prevent the MWIR light and LWIR light from reaching the bolometer 104. The MWIR light may include light emitted by the flame or fire and the LWIR light may include light emitted by one or more objects in the area in addition to the flame.
