    Abstract: This invention allows customers and other users of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to enable, disable or modify special services provided by the net work. The PSTN is defined here as all equipment world wide (land-based, radio or other ) enabling ordinary telephone users to connect to other telephone users, but exclu des private telephone networks such as "tie line" systems maintained or leased by pr ivate enterprises. Presently contemplated actions can be taken independent of the sta te of the customer's telephone line (e.g. on-hook or off-hook), and usually involve use of equipment other than telephones and communication networks other than the PSTN (e.g. compu ters operating through the Internet and pagers operating through pager networks). Th e special services include existing services (call waiting, call blocking, call forwarding , etc.) and new ones (e.g. transferring an active call from a desk phone to a mobile cellular on e without interrupting the call). Security firewalls, between the public and telephony ap plication intelligence (TAI) systems that administer customer services within the PSTN, en sure that actions by unauthorized individuals do not interfere with or adversely affect te lephone system operations. Authorized customers taking presently contemplated actions w ill not be able to adversely affect telephone system operations. The present system wil l work on information maintained at any level of an intelligent network hierarchy within t he PSTN, including service nodes through which customer services are traditionally provid ed.

    Abstract: Provided are techniques for providing annotations for revising a message. A message to be sent from a sender to a recipient is received. A meaning map associated with the sender and a meaning map associated with the recipient are obtained. The message is parsed into sub- constructs. The sub-constructs are compared in the meaning map associated with the sender and the meaning map associated with the recipient. Alternative language for the sub- constructs is identified. Annotations are provided based on the alternative language.

    Abstract: A user through a personal computer, in real time, controls the activation and selection of voice and data transmission paths in a communication network independent of network profiles. The network includes a public switched telephone network and a data network, e.g. the Internet for voice and/or data transmissions over either the voice or data networks. In the network, a voice terminal and a computer terminal are coupled to a shared voice and data terminal. A digital subscriber line access multiplexer is coupled to the shared voice and data terminal; the data network through a client server interface, and a voice network through an intelligent switch. The client server interface includes programmable stored data descriptive of network-authorized data and voice functions and transmission paths in the voice and data networks. The interface is linked to the multiplexer and switch for transmitting signaling messages directing traffic to the voice and data networks in accordance with the stored data. The computer terminal displays menus obtained from the client server which enable the user, in real time, to activate and select voice and/or data transmission paths through either the voice and/or data networks independent of pre-defined network profiles and/or traditional traffic assumptions.

    Estimating the location of a mobile unit for emergency call assistance

    Abstract: The location of a mobile unit 20 (e.g. cellular telephone, 2-way pager) making an emergency call is estimated by measuring the signal strength received at a plurality of antennas linked to base stations. Each measurement is sent through network control to a computer. The computer forms a circle 30-33 around each antenna with radius derived from signal strength received at that antenna. The intersection points of the circles are used to define a small area in which the mobile is likely to be found. This area is communicated to an emergency assistance centre together with related information such as an area map. An operator at the centre can despatch rescue personnel and ask the emergency caller to confirm the location by identifying features which are shown on the area map. Steerable antennas may be used to provide vector locations and antennas unable to receive the signal may provide zone exclusion information. The mobile unit may use a command channel to report back signal strengths received from antennae. These received signals may be progressively decreased and the point of loss of contact used to determine distance from the antennae. If a caller has more than one type of mobile unit then both may be used to calculate a search area. The method may also be used to locate stolen objects.
