SOLUTION: This ether compound is produced by proceeding a reaction of a hydroxy compound with a carbonyl compound in a hydrogen atmosphere under a catalyst while removing a formed water as a by-product with the proviso that at least one kind of hydroxy and carbonyl compounds is a polyfunctional compound. A polyfunctional alcohol used in the reaction has 2-10 hydroxy groups and polyfunctional carbonyl compound is a 2-20C compound having 2-10 carbonyl groups. The catalyst is a palladium catalyst, etc., supported on a carbon, etc. The water formed as a by-product is preferably distilled off with an unreacted raw material and the unreacted raw material is preferably separated from the water and returned to the reaction system.
