    Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:Bisbenzoxazole azo dye of formula I, wherein X is H, halogen, hydroxyl, cyano, alkoxy, etc.; Ar, Ar' are each a group of formula II or III; Y1, Y2 are each H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, etc.; W is N, CH; D, E1, E2 are each H, halogen, 4 C or lower alkyl, cyano, alkoxy. USE:Diochroic azo dyes which are yellow to blue, has a high dichroic ratio and excellent durability and is suitable for use as dichroic dyes for liquid crystal display. PREPARATION:1,4-Bis(4-aminozenzoxazol-2-yl) benzene of formula IV is diazotized and then coupled with a compd. of formula V. The resulting product is hydrolyzed to obtain a compd. of formula VI. The compd. of formula VI is diazotized and then coupled with a compd. of formula VII (wherein X' is hydroxy, amino, etc.) to obtain the a o dye of formula I.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an optical recording medium capable of being used in both an additionally writable type optical recording system and an erasable optical recording system, by providing a recording layer comprising a specified two-tone dye and a specified resin component. CONSTITUTION:The two-tone dye is a substance which has a maximum absorption in a wavelength range of 550-900nm, generates heat on absorbing focused light of He-Ne laser or semiconductor laser, and shows different optical densities to polarized light depending on the aligning direction of molecules thereof. The resin component is a substance which produces a change in the aligning direction of the molecules of the dye, and has such a property that it shows an anisotropic aggregated state of molecules at temperatures not higher than 50 deg.C and the anisotropy is partially or entirely eliminated at a temperature higher than said temperatures, particularly, at a temperature of 80-350 deg.C. Light is focused on the recording layer by using a laser having an oscillating wavelength corresponding to the absorption spectrum of the dye, thereby writing recording signals into the layer. It is possible to entirely erasing the records by heating the entire part of the medium, and it is also possible to erase part of the records by heating by a heat source such as IR rays, far ultraviolet rays and an elliptic beam of the writing laser.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composition having high coloring power, dichroic ratio, contrast and compatibility, and excellent stability and durability, by dissolving specific quinophthalone-type and thioindigo-type dichroic dyes in a nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition can be produced by dissolving (A) a quinophthalone dye of formula I (X is H or halogen; n is 1-3) (e.g. the compound of formula II) and/or (B) a thioindigo dye of formula III (R1 and R2 are H or alkyl) (e.g. the compound of formula IV) in a nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a composition for a liquid crystal color display, having excellent light resistance, and exhibiting clear reddish violet color and extremely good dichroism, by dissolving a dichroic dye composed of an anthraquinone compound having a specific structural formula in a liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition is obtained by dissolving (A) a dichroic dye composed of an anthraquinone compound of formula (R1 is amino or OH; R2 and R3 are H, amino, OH, nitro, etc.; Alk is halogen, cyano, phenyl, etc.; R4 is H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, or Alk; x is halogen or 1-4C alkyl; m is 1 or 2; n is 0, 1 or 2; m+n>=2) (preferably the compound wherein R1 is amino, R2, R3 and R4 are H, and Alk is alkyl) in (B) a liquid crystal (e.g. a nematic liquid crystal composed of a mixture of 43% 4-cyano-4'-n-pentylbipheyl, 17% 4-cyano-4'-n-propoxybiphenyl, etc.). The concentration of the dye in the liquid crystal is preferably 0.01-5%.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an organic material having improved light, heat and bleed resistance, by coloring the material with a colorant obtained through condensation of a phthalic anhydride derivative with an aromatic diamine derivative. CONSTITUTION:(A) A phthalic anhydride derivative of formula I: (m is 3 or 4, n is an integer 1 or 1, m+n=4) is condensed with (B) an aromatic diamine derivative of formula II: (R is 1,4-phenylene or 4,4'-diphenylene group which may have Cl, methyl or methoxy group as a substituent) in (C) a weakly basic organic solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide or N-methylpyrrolidone, at room temperature for 30 min or longer under stirring, and dehydrated by adding a dehydrating agent, e.g. phosphrus trichloride or phosgene, to give a colorant of formula III. 0.05-1 wt.% of the colorant is incorporated into an organic material, e.g. polyolefin or polystyrene, kneaded under heating, and molded.
