Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide titled compsn. which is colored red by the application of electric voltage consisting of a specified anthraquinone compd. and a nematic liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:(B) 0.1-3% of an anthraquinone cpd. of the formula (wherein R is 2-15C straight or branched chain alkyl) [obtd. by reacting 1-amino-4-hydroxy- 2-phenoxy(or-2-methoxy-or-2-halogeno)-anthraquinone with an alcohol of formula R1-OH (wherein R1 is the same as R) in the presence of an alkali], is blended with (A) a nematic liquid crystal to obtain the desired compsn. for liquid crystal color display. The compsn. has large dichroic ratio, exhibits large contrast ratio by the application of voltage-no voltage, excels in durability, is stable, and does not lower the performance of a device even though the device is used for many hours.

Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:An anthraquinone derivative shown by formula I (wherein R is H, 1-15C straight or branched alkyl, cyclohexyl). EXAMPLE:A compound shown by formula II. USE:A dyestuff coloring a nematic liquid crystal to a clear favorable blue color and having an extremely high two-color ratio (contrast) and excellent light fastness. PREPARATION:1,5-Dihydroxy-4,8-diamino-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid and a compound shown by formula III (wherein R1 is H, 1-15C straight or branched alkyl, cyclohexyl) are reacted in the presence of boric acid in sulfuric acid to oxidize a borate ester group and then desulfonated to synthesize the compound of formula I.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide titled compsn. which is colored red by the application of electric voltage, consisting of a specified anthraquinone compd. and a nematic liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:1.5-Diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinonedisulfonic acid is reacted with a compd. of formula I [wherein R1 is 1-15C alkyl or a group of formula -R2- 0-R3 (wherein R2 is 1-3C straight or branched chain alkylene; R3 is 1-15C straight or branched chain alkyl] in the presence of boric acid and in sulfuric acid. The resulting product is reacted with a reducing agent to remove the sulfonic group. The amino group are replaced with hydroxyl group to obtain an anthraquinone compd. of formula II. 0.1-3% of the anthraquinone compd. is blended with a nematic liquid crystal to obtain the desired compsn. for liquid crustal color display element. The compsn. exhibits large contrast ratio by the application of voltage-no voltage, excels in durability, is stable, and does not lower the performance of a device even when the device is used for many hours.

Abstract: PURPOSE:The title composition, usable for a color display on a watch or electronic calculator by the guest-host method, having improved coloring property, dichromatic ratio and durability, and comprising a specific anthraquinone dye and nematic liquid crystals. CONSTITUTION:A composition comprising (A) an anthraquinone dye of formula I [X and Y are amino or hydroxy groups; Z is methoxy, formula II or III [R1 is H, halogen atom or 1-15C (branched) alkyl group] or -NH-R2 [R2 is 1-15C (branched) alkyl group)] and (B) nematic liquid crystals, e.g. a mixture of 4- cyano-4'-n-pentylbiphenyl with 4-cyano-4'-n-propoxybiphenyl. The amount of (A) is preferably 0.1-3% based on (B). The dye (A) is obtained by recrystallizing a crude dye prepared from phenol and 1-amino-2-bromo-4-hydroxyanthraquinone from an organic solvent.

CONSTITUTION:Titled composition is obtained by mixing (a) an anthraquinone type dischromatic dye expressed by structural formula II, (wherein R is a linear or branched 1-15C alkyl or a cyclohexyl, and X is H or amino), and prepared by reacting, with heating, in an inert solvent, 3-amino-1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone with a compound represented by formula I, (wherein R is the same as above); nitrating the resulting compound; and reducing the nitrated compound with a reducing agent such as sodium hydrosulfide or sodium hydrosulfite, with (b) a nematic liquid crystal such as one consisting mainly of 4-cyano-4'-n-pentylbiphenyl or 4-cyano-4'-n-propoxybiphenyl.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To remove chlorates simply and easily, by heating a caustic alkali containing the chlorates as impurities with sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate in the presence of a ferrous or ferric salt. CONSTITUTION:NaOH prepared by the electrolysis through the diaphragmatic process of an aqueous solution of NaCl contains a very small amount of NaClO3. For removing the NaClO3, 0.1-0.2mol, expressed in terms of Fe, based on NaClO3, ferrous salt, e.g. FeCl2, or ferric salt, e.g. FeCl3, is added to the NaOH. 2-4mol, based on NaClO3, sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate is further added, and the resultant mixture is heated at 90-108 deg.C under stirring to remove toxic NaClO3 by the reductive cleavage without deteriorating the quality of the NaOH.
