    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the high sensitivity and high durability by allowing a photosensitive layer to contain the azo compound having a tetraphenyl thiophene-1,1- dioxide structure. CONSTITUTION:At least one kind of azo compound which is represented by the formula is contained as electric charge generating substance in a photosensitive layer formed on an electric conductive supporting body. The azo compound is the compound having 2-4 azo groups introduced into tetraphenyl thiophene-1,1- dioxide. As the substitution position of the azo group, is preferable the fourth position of phenyl group, and the disazo compound, trisazo compound, or tetrachis azo compound which is substituted at the fourth position can be preferably used. The content of the azo compound in the photosensitive layer is 50wt.% or less. The photosensitive layer contains at least electric charge transfer substance and binder, besides the azo compound.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare an aldehyde compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for hydrazone compounds used for photo-conductive materials by reacting 4,4'- diformyltriphenylamine with 1,1-diphenylmethylphosphonic acid ester. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I is reacted with a compound of formula II (R is lower alkyl) in the presence of a base (e.g. sodium methylate) in a solvent such as N,N'-dimethylformamide at 10 to 110 deg.C to prepare an aldehyde of formula III. The compound of formula II, the base and the solvent are employed in amounts of 0.5 equivalent time, 0.5 equivalent time and 1 to 20 weight times, respectively, that of the compound of formula I. The aldehyde compound of formula III can give hydrazone compounds useful as photo- coductive materials used for photo-sensitizing layers in the field of electro- photographic sensitizers.

    Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R , R and R are respectively H, alkyl or aryl; n is 0-5; with a proviso that R is other than H for n=0). USE:Synthetic intermediate of naphthalocyanine-based or condensed polycyclic- based coloring matter. PREPARATION:1-hydroxy-2,3-dicyanonaphthalene expressed by formula II is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III (X is halogen, arylsulfonic acid, alkylsulfonic acid or alkoxysulfonic acid) in the presence of base (e.g., Na2CO3) and in using a compound expressed by formula III as a self-dissolving solvent or in a solvent such as dimethylformamide at 0-300 deg.C for 1-15 hour to afford the compound expressed by formula I. In said reaction, 0.5-20mol equiv. the compound expressed by formula III is used to the compound expressed by formula II.

EXAMPLE:Optically active 6-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid 2'-fluorooctyl ester. USE:A synthetic intermediate for an optically active liquid crystal compound. It is useful especially as an intermediate for ferroelectric liquid crystal and chiral nematic liquid crystal and has high photochemical and chemical stability. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I (m=1) can be produced by converting 6-acetyloxynaphthalene-2-carboxilic acid of formula II into an acid chloride derivative with thionyl chloride, etc., reacting the product with an optically active 2-fluoroalkanol and deacetylating the reaction product.

PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced e.g., by reacting 6-benayloxy-2-naphthol of formula (a) with various optically active omega-[2'-(tetrahyero-2''-pyranyloxy)propyloxy]alkyl mesylate to obtain the compound of formula (b), eliminating the protecting group by reacting under acidic condition, reacting the resultant compound of formula (c) with an alkyl halide and finally hydrogenating the obtained compound of formula (d).
