    Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:An anthraquinone derivative shown by formula I (wherein R is H, 1-15C straight or branched alkyl, cyclohexyl). EXAMPLE:A compound shown by formula II. USE:A dyestuff coloring a nematic liquid crystal to a clear favorable blue color and having an extremely high two-color ratio (contrast) and excellent light fastness. PREPARATION:1,5-Dihydroxy-4,8-diamino-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid and a compound shown by formula III (wherein R1 is H, 1-15C straight or branched alkyl, cyclohexyl) are reacted in the presence of boric acid in sulfuric acid to oxidize a borate ester group and then desulfonated to synthesize the compound of formula I.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide titled compsn. which is colored red by the application of electric voltage, consisting of a specified anthraquinone compd. and a nematic liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:1.5-Diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinonedisulfonic acid is reacted with a compd. of formula I [wherein R1 is 1-15C alkyl or a group of formula -R2- 0-R3 (wherein R2 is 1-3C straight or branched chain alkylene; R3 is 1-15C straight or branched chain alkyl] in the presence of boric acid and in sulfuric acid. The resulting product is reacted with a reducing agent to remove the sulfonic group. The amino group are replaced with hydroxyl group to obtain an anthraquinone compd. of formula II. 0.1-3% of the anthraquinone compd. is blended with a nematic liquid crystal to obtain the desired compsn. for liquid crustal color display element. The compsn. exhibits large contrast ratio by the application of voltage-no voltage, excels in durability, is stable, and does not lower the performance of a device even when the device is used for many hours.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composition having high coloring power, dichroic ratio, contrast and compatibility, and excellent stability and durability, by dissolving specific quinophthalone-type and thioindigo-type dichroic dyes in a nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition can be produced by dissolving (A) a quinophthalone dye of formula I (X is H or halogen; n is 1-3) (e.g. the compound of formula II) and/or (B) a thioindigo dye of formula III (R1 and R2 are H or alkyl) (e.g. the compound of formula IV) in a nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide superior corrosion resistance even to a thin gold plated film by dipping a product, in an aq. alkaline chromate soln., obtd. by plating a silver base material with gold followed by electrolysis using the product as a cathode. CONSTITUTION:A product obtd. by plating a silver base material with gold is dipped in an aq. alkaline chromate soln. of pH>=9 pref. contg. phosphoric acid or a phosphate followed by electrolysis using the product as a cathode at a current density of 0.3-0.5 A/dm for 1-5 min. By this method formation of a corrosive film can be prevented even in case of a gold plated film with such a small thickness as 1-3 mu.
