Abstract: A communication system (100) including a group management processor (144) operable to divide an enlarged group of user terminals formed by patching of smaller groups into sub-sets of user terminals including: (1) an encrypted sub-set of terminals (103,113, 123) which are operable to undertake only encrypted communications; and (2) a selectable-clear sub-set of terminals (105, 115, 125) which includes: (i) selectable terminals that are able to undertake clear communications and, when selected, encrypted communications; and (ii) clear terminals that are operable to undertake only clear communications; and a translator (143) operable to translate a communication sent in a first encrypted form from a user terminal (103) of one of the sub-sets into the second encrypted form suitable for decryption by user terminals (105, 115) of the other sub-set.

Abstract: A method of controlling location information of subscribers 210, 212, 222 in a wireless, ad-hoc communications network 200. The network 200 comprises a plurality of nodes (base stations) 204, 216, 226 wherein each of the nodes has a Visitor Location Register (VLR) 208, 220, 230 and at least a portion of the nodes are provided with Home Location Registers (HLRs) 206, 218 228. When an operation of a first node 216 is to be reconfigured, for example, due to the addition of a new node or disconnection or movement of the first node 216, at least a part of the records from a first HLR 218 assigned to the first node 216 is transferred to at least one of the other nodes 226 of the network 200. The transfer is preferably controlled by a control unit which selects the target node(s) 226 and creates a back-up copy of the first HLR 218 which can be used if an error occurs during the transfer. Depending on circumstances, all or only part of the HLR records can be transferred and the transferred records can be assigned to a new HLR at the target node(s), which may or may not already have a HLR, or merged with records in a HLR already at the target node(s).

Abstract: A method (300) for performing encrypted communication in a wireless communication system having a centralised network operably coupled to a serving communication unit that wirelessly communicates with a plurality of remote communication units. The method comprises the steps of transmitting an encrypted message, preferably a registration message, from one of the plurality of remote communication units to the serving communication unit where the serving communication unit does not contain a key to decrypt the encrypted message. The serving communication unit (122) stores (335) the encrypted message and retrieves (330) a key from the centralised network to facilitate decryption of the encrypted message. A communication system and associated communication units are also described. In storing encrypted messages such as registration messages, coupled with a key retrieval mechanism, mobile subscriber units are able to perform encrypted registration without either the subscriber unit or the system knowing where or when the encrypted registration request will be made.

Abstract: In a typical cellular network, when a call is received at a gateway, the gateway will be connected to the HLR (Home Location Register) which allows the call to be routed to a mobile subscriber. In an ad-hoc (e.g. TETRA or private) network however, the network layout may be constantly changing, and so the gateway may not be connected to a HLR which causes a delay in routing the call to a subscriber. This problem is solved by providing a look up table at each node (base station) which holds the location of the node which contains the HLR for each subscriber. Therefore, at each node when a subscriber registers there will be a pointer to the node which contains the HLR for the subscriber. Also, each HLR is assigned a node which has a link to a gateway.
