Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing latency in a group communication network (100) provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and the PTT{XE"PTT"} latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles (102, 102, 106) are dormant and no traffic channel is active. The method and apparatus provides for exchanging the group call signaling through the use of the short data burst (SDB) message signaling. The method and apparatus provides for re-establishing dedicated traffic channels for the talker mobile and the dormant listener mobiles advantageously in parallel.

A method and apparatus for reducing dormant-wakeup latency in a group communication network provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormant-wakeup time and the PTT latency perceived by the talker through caching the network-initiated wakeup triggers destined for target listeners, and delivering a wakeup trigger to a target mobile station as soon as the target mobile station has re-established its traffic channel.

An embodiment is directed to displaying information to a user of a communications device. The communications device receives a query including a social parameter, a temporal parameter and a spatial parameter relative to the user that are indicative of a desired visual representation of a set of data objects. The communications device determines degrees to which the social, temporal and spatial parameters of the query are related to each of the set of data objects in social, temporal and spatial dimensions, respectively. The communications device displaying a first visual representation of at least a portion of the set of data objects to the user based on whether the determined degrees of relation in the social dimension, temporal dimension and spatial dimension satisfy the respective parameters of the query.
Abstract:
Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate relocating an IP buffer from a conventional location in a user device handset to a radio-access network (RAN) interface in order to reduce acquisition delay in the user device. By performing IP buffering at the transmission side of a forward link transmission, acquisition time can be reduced by approximately 5-7 seconds. Additionally, a physical layer aware encoder can be employed, which has knowledge of transmission constraints associated with, for example, a conventional DVB-H transmission protocol, and can parse streaming media into 1-second segments that can be pre-packaged in a current superframe for display at a subsequent time.

A push-to-talk communication device to participate in a group communication net (100) is claimed. The group communication net (100) comprises a controller (104) to manage the group communication net (100) and interface with the push-to-talk communication devices (108, 112 and 116). A processor converts information signals into packet data suitable for transmission over a distributed network. The processor may also have identification information, and updates its identification information when its current identification information has or is about to change. The processor then transmits its new identification information to the controller (104). The push-to-talk devices (108, 112 and 116) also comprise a transmitter to transmit packet data through a first channel to the controller. A receiver receives packet data through a second channel from the controller. The push-to- talk devices (108, 112 and 116) also comprise a user activated mechanism to activate the transmitter when a user of the communication device wishes to transmit packet data to the controller

Abstract:
A system and method for providing group communication services. Each of a plurality of communication devices coverts information signals into data packets suitable for transmission over a data network, such as the Internet. The data packets are transmitted through the data network to a communications manager. The communications manager acts as a configurable switch, allowing communications from any communication device to be routed to the plurality of communication devices. The communications manager further allows users of other communication systems and devices to participate in group communications with each other.
Abstract:
A service for Public Safety (PS) and Law Enforcement (LE) users on commercial wireless networks which assure them access to packet data services. The service request is application based. The applications that are for official use, by the PS/LE users, could have a reserved priority level associated with them. The reserved priority level could be higher than a normal commercial user. The network could use the priority to distinguish users, and dynamically allocate and optimize network resources. The network could use priority level information to perform access, admission, and congestion control. The PS/LE user could use the official applications while on duty and un-official ones while off duty, thus, additionally freeing up network resources. The PS/LE users could then use advanced commercial packet data services, without the need for a private network, while at the same time making it feasible for commercial networks.
