    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a product having good scratch resistance even under a high speed running condition and excellent in surface flatness by adding inert particles positive in zeta-potential within pure water and inert particles negative in zeta-potential within pure water. CONSTITUTION:In a laminated polyester film consisting of a main layer and a sub-layer, the sub-layer is laminated to at least the single surface of the main layer. Herein, polyester constituting the sub-layer contains at least two kinds of inert particles insoluble in polyester. These particles contain 0.01-2wt.% of inert inorg. particles negative in zeta-potential within pure water and 0.01-2wt.% of inert particles negative in zeta-potential within pure water composed of aromatic carboxylate and at least one of an alkali metal compound and an alkaline earth metal compound with respect to polyester constituting the sub-layer. The thickness of the sub-layer is pref. 1/100-40/100 of the whole thickness of the laminated film.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester excellent in dispersion of inert particles and capable of giving a fiber or a film at good productivity by performing specified treatment after substantially completing the transesterification reaction in producing the polyester from an aromatic dicarboxylic ester and a glycol. CONSTITUTION:A process for producing a polyester from an aromatic dicarboxylic acid ester (e.g. dimethyl terephthalate) and a glycol (e.g. ethylene glycol), which comprises adding, after the transesterification reaction is substantially completed, 0.5-5.0mol, per mol of the acid component, of a glycol to the reaction product without substantially distilling it from the reaction system, raising the temperature in the reaction system to 150-200 deg.C, and adding a glycol slurry of particles (e.g. colloidal silica) inert to the polyester in the same reaction temperature range.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare a polyester compsn. which contains coarse particles only in a small proportion though it contains particles in a large proportion by adding a glycol slurry contg. the particles inert to the polyester in a specific way to the reaction system at the steps of esterification or transesterification and polycondensation for preparing the polyester. CONSTITUTION:In preparing a polyester by esterifying or transesterifying a dicarboxylic acid component contg. an arom. dicarboxylic acid as the main component or an ester-forming deriv. thereof with a glycol and polycondensing the resulting ester, a glycol slurry of particles inert to the polyester is added to the reaction system at least once after the conversion of esterification or transesterification reaches 0.2 or higher and before the completion of esterification or transesterification, and at least once after the completion of esterification or transesterification and before the intrinsic viscosity of the reaction product reaches 0.2 as a result of the progress of polycondensation.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare a polyester compsn. which contains a colloidal silica with an improved dispersibility and has improved high-speed film-forming properties by adding a slurry comprising an alkali metal-contg. colloidal silica and a glycol to a transesterification product, removing the glycol from the reaction system, and conducting the polycondensation of the transesterification product. CONSTITUTION:In producing a polyester from an arom. dicarboxylate (e.g. dimethyl terephthalate) and a glycol (e.g. ethylene glycol), after the substantial completion of transesterification, a slurry comprising 1 pt.wt. colloidal silica contg. 0.5-1.0wt.% alkali metal (e.g. Na) and having a mean particle diameter of 50-1000mum and 5-20 pts.wt. glycol is added to the transesterification product. During or after the addition of the slurry, the glycol is removed from the reaction system while keeping the system at an atmospheric pressure; after the molar ratio of the glycol to the acid component reaches 1.5-3.0, the polycondensation is conducted at a reduced pressure, giving a polyester compsn. A film prepd. from the compsn. has a surface with a uniform unevenness and an improved slipperiness and is suitable for a magnetic medium.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester composition improved in film-forming properties and giving a film improved in slidability and abrasion resistance, etc., by adding specified amounts of a glycol-soluble Mg or Mn compound, a glycol-soluble alkali metal compound, a phosphorous compound and inert inorganic particles to the reaction system in the production of a polyester. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic dicarboxylic acid ester (e.g., dimethyl terephthalate) and a glycol (e.g., ethylene glycol) are subjected to transesterification in the presence of a glycol-soluble Mg or Mn compound and a glycol-soluble alkali metal compound in an amount as specified by formula I (wherein A is the number of moles of the alkali metal atmos per 10 g of the polyester). The Mg or Mn compound in an amount satisfying formula II (wherein M is the total number of moles of the Mg or Mn atoms per 10 g of the polyester) is added to the reaction system. A phosphorous compound in an amount satisfying formula III (wherein P is the number of moles of the phosphorus atmos per 10 g of the polyester) is added to the reaction system. After 0.01-5wt.% inert inorganic particles of a mean particle diameter of 0.01-5mum are added to the reaction system, the polycondensation is completed to produce a polyester.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a film improved in surface flatness and cutting resistance and having uniform thickness by adding a metal element and phosphorus element represented by a specific formula to polyester constituting an auxiliary layer and setting a crystallization parameter defined by a separate specific formula to specific temp. or lower and making the same smaller than that of main layer polyester. CONSTITUTION:It is necessary to add a metal element (M) and a phosphorus element (P) to polyester constituting an auxiliary layer so as to satisfy formulae 0.1 g of polyester. In the constitution of DELTATcg=Tc-Tg (wherein Tc is crystallization temp. of polyester and Tg is glass transition temp. of polyester), the crystallization parameter DELTATcg of the auxiliary layer polyester is 70 deg.C or lower and smaller than the crystallization parameter Tcg of the main layer polyester. When M, M/P and DELTATcg are within prescribed ranges, a film good in surface roughness and cutting resistance and having uniform thickness is obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a polyethylene naphthalate film free from surface defects and reduced in unevenness of thickness by molding a polyethylene naphthalate obtained by continuously polycondensing bis(hydroxyethyl) naphthalate into a film. CONSTITUTION:Bis(hydroxyethyl) naphthalate obtained by the transesterification or esterification of naphthalenedicarboxylic acid with ethylene glycol is continuously polycondensed at 230-310 deg.C in a vacuum to obtain polyethylene naphthalate having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.5-0.8 and a terminal carboxyl concentration of 45 equivalents/10 g or below. This polyethylene naphthalate is melt-extruded at 290-320 deg.C, and the extrudate is cooled with a cooling roll to obtain an unoriented film. This film is stretched in the machine and transverse directions at a stretch ratio of 3-10 for each direction, optionally stretched again in the machine direction at a stretch ratio of 1-3, and then heat-treated at 190-230 deg.C to obtain a polyethylene naphthalate having an average height of surface protrusions of 5-400nm.
