Abstract: This invention relates to a composite semipermeable membrane of low-pressure high desalination type having an excellent chlorine resistance and a method for the production thereof. This membrane is composed of a microporous supporting membrane and an ultrathin membrane covering said supporting membrane, wherein the ultrathin membrane comprises a polyamide prepared by the polycondensation of a dicarboxylic acid halide with piperazine and ethylenediamine as the main component and a molar fraction of ethylenediamine polyamide constituents to piperazine polyamide constituents is regulated to be in the range of 0.01 to 0.25, so that the membrane has a high desalination rate, a high fresh water generation rate and a sufficient chlorine durability. Thus it can be used in a small ultrapure water generator and a household water purifier and as a reverse osmosis membrane for treating waste water or the like.

Abstract: A process of producing a composite semipermeable membrane with high performance, which does not involve a highly ignitable solvent or a chlorofluorocarbon solvent which destructs the environment is disclosed. In the process of the present invention, a polyfunctional amine solution and a polyfunctional acid halide solution in a hydrocarbon-based solvent with a flash point of not lower than 10 C are applied on a surface of a microporous substrate to allow interfacial polycondensation reaction so as to form a cross-linked polyamide-based ultra-thin membrane superposed on the microporous substrate. Then a gas is blown on the surface of the ultra-thin membrane so as to evaporate the hydrocarbon-based solvent, which gas has a velocity at the surface of 2 - 20 m/sec., a temperature of 10 - 80 C that is lower than the flash point of the hydrocarbon-based solvent, and an absolute humidity of not less than 1 g of water per 1 kg of dry gas.

Abstract: Semipermeable membrane comprises crosslinked polymer consisting mainly of modified polyether amine obtd. by reaction of polyether having repeat unit of formula (I): (where X is Cl, Br or I; i and j are mole fraction, and i + j = 1, 0 =i =1, 0 = j =0.8, and polyamine having more than two prim. or sec. amino gps. (prim. amino is one or less). The membrane has good resistance to hydrolysis, chemicals, esp. chlorine, and mechanical property. The membrane is useful for the desalination of seawater or brine. In an example, a semipermeable membrane was obtd. by casting modified polyether amine of 4-(aminomethyl)piperidine on polysulphone membrane.
