    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing an amide or a lactam according to the Beckmann rearrangement of an oxime compound, capable of producing the same at a high conversion and a high yield without producing a large amount of byproducts such as ammonium sulfate.SOLUTION: An oxime compound is rearranged in the presence of a compound represented by formula (1) in a solvent, i.e., a lactone to produce a corresponding amide or lactam (in the formula, R, Rand Reach independently represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkyl group substituted with a halogen atom, an aryl group, an aralkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, a hydroxyl group, an aryloxy group, an alkoxy group substituted with an halogen atom, a mercapto group, a carboxyl group, a substituted oxycarbonyl group, an acyl group, an acyloxy group, a nitro group, a sulfone group, a cyano group, an amino group, or an oxyamino group; and L represents a leaving group).
