Abstract: Phase change ink compositions comprising (a) an ink carrier comprising a monoamide and a tetra-amide, and (b) pigment particles having oxygen-containing functional groups on the surfaces thereof. Also, processes for preparing a phase change ink which comprise (a) melting a tetra-amide which is solid at about 25.degree.C; (b) admixing with the molten tetra-amide pigment particles having oxygen-containing functional groups on the surfaces thereof; (c) maintaining the mixture of pigment and tetra-amide at a temperature of at least about 100.degree.C and at a temperature of no more than about 200.degree.C for a period sufficient to enable the molten tetra-amide to wet the pigment particle surfaces; (d) subsequent to wetting of the pigment particle surfaces with the molten tetra-amide, adding to the mixture a monoamide; (e) subsequent to addition of the monoamide, subjecting the resulting mixture to high shear mixing; and (f) subsequent to subjecting the mixture to high shear mixing, optionally adding to the mixture additional ink ingredients.

Abstract: Ink jet inks and liquid developers are disclosed which contain coloured particles comprising hydrophilic silica particles, to the surfaces of which dyes are covalently bonded through silane coupling agents. The ink jet inks generally comprise a liquid medium and a plurality of the coloured silica particles. The liquid developers generally comprise a liquid medium, a resin, a pluraltiy of the coloured silica particles, and a charge-control agent. The particles are prepared by a process which comprises reacting hydrophilic silica particles with a silane coupling agent in the absence of water to form particles having covalently attached thereto coupling agents, followed by reacting a dye with the coupling agent attached to the silica particles.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a more perfect crystalline form of the Type I polymorph of titanyl phthalocyanine which comprises dissolving a precursor titanyl phthalocyanine Type I in a solution of trihaloacetic acid and alkylene chloride; adding the resultant solution to a solvent thereby enabling precipitation of Type X titanyl phthalocyanine; separating the titanyl phthalocyanine Type X from the solution; followed by a first washing with an organic solvent and a second washing with water; slurrying the resulting Type X titanyl phthalocyanine in an organic solvent enabling conversion of said Type X to Type IV titanyl phthalocyanine; and thereafter, subjecting the Type IV titanyl phthalocyanine obtained to treatment with an organic solvent to enable said crystalline form of titanyl phthalocyanine Type I.

Abstract: Disclosed is a process for forming secure images which comprises electrostatically charging an imaging member (1); imagewise exposing the charged member, thereby forming a latent image on the member; developing the latent image with a liquid developer comprising a liquid medium, a charge control additive, and toner particles comprising a colorant and a polymeric material; allowing the developed image to dry on the imaging member; contacting the portion of the imaging member with the dry developed image with a substantially transparent sheet (18) having an adhesive material on the surface thereof in contact with the imaging member, thereby transferring the developed image from the imaging member to the substantially transparent sheet; contacting the adhesive surface of the substantially transparent sheet with the developed image with a paper sheet (25) having a polymeric coating on the surface that is in contact with the substantially transparent sheet; and applying heat and pressure to the substantially transparent sheet and the paper sheet at a temperature and pressure sufficient to affix the image permanently to the paper. The resulting document is a paper sheet covered with the transparent sheet, with the developer material that forms the image being situated between the paper sheet and the transparent sheet. The disclosed process is generally useful for applications such as passport photographs, identification badges, banknote paper, and the like.
