Abstract: PURPOSE: A colloidal silica composition and a method for preparing the same are provided to obtain silica glass having high purity and excellent sinterability. CONSTITUTION: The colloidal silica composition comprises a silicon alkoxide compound, an organic solvent, a deionized water and a base catalyst. The colloidal silica composition is characterized by further comprising a strong base organic material for controlling the hydrogen ion concentration to prevent the generation of agglomerates during the concentration. The colloidal silica composition is prepared by the method comprising the steps of: forming a colloidal silica by agitating a silicon alkoxide compound, an organic solvent, a deionized water and a base catalyst; washing it with deionized water to remove by-products; adding a strong base organic material to control the hydrogen ion concentration; and concentrating the colloidal silica composition.

Abstract: PURPOSE: A method for manufacturing a silica glass by extrusion is provided which forms a wet gel having strength and viscosity adequate for molding and continuously produces the large sized silica glass from the wet gel and minimizes crack caused by volatilization of alcohol. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises steps of: (i) mixing fumed silica with deionized water to form a first sol; (ii) hydrolyzing a silicone alkoxide having two alkoxide groups to form a hydrolysate; (iii) mixing the hydrolysate of the silicone alkoxide with the first sol to form a second sol; (iv) filling up an extruding machine with the second sol; (v) applying heat to the heating area of the extruding machine to gelate the second sol; and (vi) extruding the gel in the extruding machine out by pressure.
