    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title sugar alcohol-silica composite made highly functional, by mixing alkoxysilanes and sugar alcohols, adding water to gel the mixture, and occluding the sugar alcohols in the amorphous silica. CONSTITUTION:Sugar alcohols (e.g., inositol) and alkoxysilanes (e.g., tetraethoxysilane) are mixed along with a solvent and a reaction accelerator, as required. From 2-30mol water is the preferably added to 1mol of the alkoxysilane to gel the mixture. The gelled material is dried at 50-100 deg.C under reduced pressure to obtain a sugar alcohol-silica composite. The obtained composite has excellent heat stability and chemical stability, and is insoluble in water. As a result, the composite can be excellently used as an adsorption and separation agent having a molecule identifying function with high selectivity, a highly functional chromatography packing agent having a long service life, and a separating and dividing agent for geometrical optical isomers.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:A platinum-carbon catalyst modified with cinchona alkaloid is used to readily conduct asymmetric hydrogenation of alpha-ketolactone to obtain optically active alpha-hydroxylactone such as D-pantolactone which is used as a starting substance for medicines. CONSTITUTION:A platinum-carbon catalyst is modified with a cinchona alkaloid, preferably readily available quinine (-), quinidine (+), cinchonine (+) or cinchonidine and the resultant catalyst is used to effect asymmetric hydrogenation of an alpha-ketolactone in a relatively high asymmetry yield to form optically active alpha-hydroxylactone which is practically used as a starting substance for medicines, food and feed additives. According to the present invention, the modified catalyst is easily prepared, the product is readily isolated.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To directly produce a rosin alcohol useful as a rubber additive, a plasticizer for synthetic resin, etc., in high yield without passing through a rosin ester as an intermediate by hydrogenating a rosin in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A rosin alcohol is produced in high yield by hydrogenating a rosin at 150-400 deg.C under a pressure of 10-300kg/cm in the presence of 1-50 pts.wt. (based on 1 pt.wt. of the rosin) of a catalyst produced by supporting 0.01-20wt.% (in terms of metal) of ruthenium and 0.1-20mol (based on 1mol of ruthenium) of tin on a carrier (preferably alumina), preferably a catalyst containing ruthenium and tin dispersed in a gel derived from a hydrolyzed product of a metal alkoxide and obtained by dissolving a carrier metal alkoxide, a ruthenium compound and a tin compound in an organic solvent, adding water to the solution, heating the mixture under stirring at 60-100 deg.C under normal pressure or reduced pressure and drying by heating under reduced pressure.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To use inexpensive raw materials and to efficiently produce the title compound by a relative simple process at low cost by reducing a long-chain diacid monoester with hydrogen in the presence of a ruthenium-based and/or a rhenium-based catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A long-chain diacid monoester (e.g. pentadecane diacid monomethyl ester) shown by formula I (R is alkyl; n is 8-16 integer) is brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a ruthenium-based catalyst (especially preferably one containing ruthenium and tin) and/ or a rhenium-based catalyst (especially preferably one containing rhenium and tin) to give an omega- hydroxy fatty acid ester (e.g. omega-hydroxypentadecanoic acid methyl ester) shown by formula II. Advantageously the compound shown by formula I is readily produced. The omega-hydroxy fatty acid ester is useful as a raw material for drugs, a synthetic raw material for macrocyclic lactones and a raw material for polymers, etc.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for surfactant, etc., under low hydrogen pressure at a low cost by hydrogenating oleic acid in the presence of a ruthenium/tin solid catalyst exhibiting high catalytic activity and stability and produced by a specific reproducible process. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced in high selectivity by hydrogenating oleic acid with H2 under a hydrogen pressure of 1-200kg/cm at 50-400 deg.C using a ruthenium/tin solid catalyst prepared by using a ruthenium compound and a tin compound as essential elements, adding aluminum or silicon compound to the elements, mixing the components in an organic solvent as necessary under heating to obtain a uniform solution, adding water to the solution, stirring the mixture as necessary under heating to effect the hydrolysis of the components, drying the gel produced by using the above procedures as essential procedures and, as necessary, subjecting the dried get to calcination, reduction, etc. The above compound of aluminum or silicon is preferably alkoxide.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon-metal composite having high surface activity and useful as various catalysts or useful for the adsorption and removal of a malodor or harmful matter by highly dispersing a fine particle of a metal or metal oxide formed from a metal salt on the surface of carbonized chaff. CONSTITUTION:A reduced body of chaff having at least one kind of a metal selected from a group consisting of Fe, Cu, Ag, Ti, Zn, Ca and Mg and/or oxide of the metal supported thereon is obtained or a solution of at least one kind of a metal salt of the aforementioned metal group is infiltrated in chaff and the impregnated one is heated in a reducing atmosphere to obtain a carbon- metal composite. As the metal of the metal salt, Fe(II) (III), Ag(II), Cu(I) (II), Ti(III) (IV), Zn(II), Ca(II) and Mg(II) are designated. Any metal salt dissolved in water or alcohol may be used and a solvent is removed by heating and the residue is heated at 300-900 deg.C in a reducing atmosphere (nitrogen atmosphere) to form the carbon-metal composite having high surface activity and used as various catalysts.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain inorganic powder having uniformly dispersed metal, by treating a solution of a metal salt in a polar solvent with a colloidal solution of a metal hydroxide to give a uniform liquid and drying the liquid. CONSTITUTION:A suction of a metal salt in a polar solvent is treated with a colloidal solution of a metal hydroxide to give a liquid, which is dried to form inorganic powder having highly dispersed metal. One or more selected from chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, molybdenum, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, silver, tantalum, hafnium, lanthanides, tungsten, rhenium, osmium, yttrium, niobium, indium, platinum, gold and actinides are used as the metal of the metal salt. A solution containing one or more oxygen- containing compounds selected from boria, magnesia, alumina, silica, silicate, calcia, titania, baria, zirconia and antimony oxide is used as the colloidal solution of the metal hydroxide. Spray drying is essential as the drying.
