Abstract: The invention relates to a method for dehydrating hydrocyanic acid by distillation. Said method is characterised in that a crude hydrocyanic acid containing between 50 and 99.9 wt. % HCN, between 0.1 and 40 wt. % water, between 0 and 15 wt. % carbon oxides and optionally between 0.01 and 1 wt. % non-volatile stabiliser is distilled in a distillation column at a pressure of between 1 bar and 2.5 bar, a sump temperature of between 100 ~C and 130 ~C and a head temperature of between 25 ~C and 54 ~C in the absence of a volatile stabiliser. A discharge stream, containing purified anhydrous hydrocyanic acid and carbon oxides is thus obtained from the head and a discharge stream containing water and optionally the non-volatile stabiliser is obtained from the sump.

Abstract: The invention is a process for preparing tetraalkyl-substituted biphenol which comprises reacting a 2,4- or 2,6-dialkyl substituted phenol in which the alkyl groups contain 1 to 6 carbon atoms with a peroxidase enzyme in the presence of a peroxide in an aqueous medium to yield a tetraalkyl-substituted biphenol by oxidative coupling of the 2,4- or 2,6-dialkyl substituted phenol, or yielding a tetra-alkyl substituted quinone, and reducing the quinone to obtain a tetraalkyl-substituted biphenol. The invention further includes a process for preparing a tetraaryl-substituted biphenol in which the aryl groups contain 6 to 10 carbon atoms which comprises racting a 2,4 or 2,6 diarylphenol with a peroxidase enzyme to yield a tetraaryl-substituted biphenol. A process for reducing a tetraalkyl-substituted quinone to corresponding tetraalkyl-substituted biphenol which comprises reducing the quinone with a phenol in an aqueous medium at a temperature of about 60° to 120° C. is also included.

Abstract: A process is described for preparing 3-pentenenitrile, characterized by the following process steps: (a) reacting 1,3-butadiene with hydrogen cyanide over at least one catalyst to obtain a stream 1 which comprises 3-pentenenitrile, 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile, the at least one catalyst and 1,3-butadiene, (b) distilling stream 1 in a column to obtain a high-1,3-butadiene stream 2 as the top product and a low-1,3-butadiene stream 3 as the bottom product which comprises 3-pentenenitrile, the at least one catalyst and 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile, (c) distilling stream 3 in a column to obtain a stream 4 as the top product which comprises 1,3-butadiene, a stream 5 which comprises 3-pentenenitrile and 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile at a side draw of the column, and a stream 6 as the bottom product which comprises the at least one catalyst, (d) distilling stream 5 to obtain a stream 7 as the top product which comprises 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile, and a stream 8 as the bottom product which comprises 3-pentenenitrile.
