    Abstract: Impact-resistant thermoplastic moulding material (I) comprises 60-95 wt.% hard monovinyl aromatic polymer matrix and 5-40 wt.% dispersed soft phase (II) in the form of drops, above 80% of which (no. ave.) are in the range 0.01-0.3 micron, where (II) is a graft mixed polymer of the matrix monomer(s) (III) and an elastomer. The novelty is that (II) is obtd. by known initiated radical polymerisation of (III) in the presence only of homopolybutadiene of mean mol. wt. 30,000-140,000 (IV). Pref. (IV) has mean mol. wt. 30,000-120,000 (esp. pref. 35,000-100,000).

    Abstract: A halogen-free flameproofed thermoplastic molding material consists of a halogen-free thermoplastic resin (A) and one or more further halogen-free components. The thermoplastic resin (A) is present in an amount of from 30 to 90% by weight, based on the molding material. The latter contains, as further components, from 1 to 50% by weight of a phenol/aldehyde resin (B), from 1 to 50% by weight of a nitrogen-containing organic compound (C) and from 3 to 50% by weight of a phosphorus-containing organic compound (D), the percentages in each case being based on the molding material. The molding material is used for the production of flameproofed moldings.

    Abstract: Polyphenylene ethers are prepared from monohydric phenols, which possess alkyl substituents in the two ortho-positions and, if desired, in the meta-position, but not in the para-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at from 15 DEG to 50 DEG C. and under from 1 to 10 bar in the presence of a catalyst complex, of a solvent and, if required, of an activator, by a method in which the conversion of the phenols is carried out in two more reaction zones, in which some or all of the solvent, the catalyst complex and the phenols and, where relevant, the activator is initially taken and is circulated by means of a conveying unit, and about 60-100% of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen required for the oxidative coupling is introduced into the first reaction zone and from 0 to about 40% of the said stoichiometric amount is introduced into the second reaction zone.
