Abstract: Surface-crosslinked superabsorbent polymer (SAP) particles having a clay in the vicinity of the surfaces of the SAP particles a clay are disclosed. The clay is added to SAP particles during surface crosslinking to substantially reduce the generation, and recycling, of SAP fines, and to provide SAP particles having an improved acquisition rate of fluids and an improved permeability of a fluid through the swollen SAP particles. Diaper cores and absorbent articles containing the surface crosslinked SAP particles also are disclosed.

Abstract: The invention relates to hydrogels capable of absorbing aqueous fluids, which hydrogels are produced by polymerization of olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids or their derivatives. The hydrogels are characterized in that before, during or after the polymerization reaction and before drying a silicic acid alkali salt of the general formula (I) M2O×nSiO2 is added to the polymerization reaction mixture. In said formula M is an alkali metal and n is a number between 0.5 and 4. The hydrogel obtained in this way is then dried at an elevated temperature. The invention also relates to a method for producing said hydrogels and to their use for absorbing aqueous fluids.

Said foams can be obtained by (a) heating and cross-linking an aqueous solution or dispersion, containing, respectively, at least one melamine/formaldehyde precondensate, an emulsifier, an expanding agent and a hardener, a foam being formed, (b) subsequently tempering the foam for a period of 1 to 180 minutes at 120 to 300 DEG C, volatile parts being removed, and (c) treating the foam with at least one polymer during or after the tempering process, said polymer containing primary and/or secondary amino groups and having a molar mass of at least 300. The invention also relates to a method for producing the hydrophilic, open-cell, elastic foams and to their use in hygiene products for absorbing, distributing and immobilising bodily fluids.

Abstract: A flexible absorbent sheet material containing an acidic water-absorbing resin, a basic water-absorbing resin, and a plasticizer, and its method of manufacture, are disclosed. The sheets contain about 60% to 100% by weight of the acidic and basic water-absorbent resin and plasticizer. The absorbent sheets have unexpected flexibility and structural integrity, while exhibiting exceptional water absorption and retention properties.
