    Abstract: Halogen-substd. anthraquinones are obtd. by the gas phase oxidn. of diphenylmethane cpds. of formula (I):- (where R1-3 are each H or an aliphatic gp; X aY are each halogen, or the Y gps. and one X gp. may be H) in the presence of a catalyst contg. TiO2 and/or ZrO2 and V2O5 in a wt. ratio of 0.004-0.75 pt. V2O5 based on 1 pt. TiO2 and/or ZrO2. The prods. are useful as raw materials esp. for the prepn. of substd. anthraquinones. The hitherto difficulty obtainable 1-chloroanthraquinone may now be obtained from mono-, di- and polyhaloanthraquinones. The aminoanthraquinones which are also obtainable, are useful in the prepn. of vat dyes and light fast lacquer pigments. In an example, mixt. of 5- and 6-chloro-2-methyldiphenylmethane was oxidise to give a mixt. of 1- and 2-chloroanthraquinone in a 1:7 ratio.
