[Also in Division Dl] A composition suitable for treating textiles comprises an aqueous solution containing a tetramethylol derivative of a diurethane of a glycol having 2-6 carbon atoms in the glycol radical which is etherified on the methylol groups by alkyl radicals having 1-6 carbon atoms, e.g. N,N,N1,N 1 -tetramethoxy methyl butane diol- (1,4)-diurethane, and an acid curing catalyst, e.g. sodium hydrogen sulphate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol hydrochloride, magnesium chloride and zinc nitrate, and may also contain wetting agents, e.g. alkali metal salts of alkylnaphthalene sulphonic acids or of sulphonated dioctyl succinate, water repellants, e.g. paraffin wax emulsions containing aluminium or zirconium compounds, silicones or perfluorinated aliphatic compounds, softening agents, e.g. ethenoxylation products of high molecular weight fatty acids, fatty alcohols or fatty amides, high molecular weight polyglycol ethers and their esters, high molecular weight fatty acids, fatty alcohol sulphonates, stearyl-N,N-ethylenurea or stearylamidomethyl pyridinium chloride, finishes, e.g. cellulose ethers or esters, alginates, polyamides, polyvinyl ethers, polyvinyl alcohols, polyacrylic or methacrylic acid or esters or amides thereof, polyvinyl propionate, polyvinylpyrrolidone, copolymers of vinyl chloride and acrylic esters, of butadiene and styrene or acrylonitrile, of α-dichloroethylene, #-chloroalkyl acrylic esters or vinyl-#-ethyl ether and acrylamide or the amides of crotonic or maleic acid, or of N-methylolmethacrylamide and other polymerizable compounds, isocyanates, diisocyanates, polyethylene imines, polyamines, ether-oxylated polyamides or silicic esters, acrylamide or methacrylamide polymers containing free and/or etherified N-methylol groups, the condensation product of triethanolamine and stearic acid quaternized with dimethyl sulphate water soluble metal complex dyes, e.g. azo compounds containing combined metal such as chromium, cobalt or copper, or dyes obtained by the reaction of dyes containing reactive hydrogen atoms with formaldehyde, the methylol groups of which may be etherified.

    Abstract: Dimethylolglyoxalmonoureine is made by reacting urea with an equimolar amount of glyoxal in an aqueous medium at pH of 3.8 to 4.2 at 25-60 DEG C. and reacting the intermediate thus obtained, without isolation, with two molar equivalents of formaldehyde at a pH of 7 to 7.5 at 25-60 DEG C. As glyoxal in aqueous solution shows an acid reaction it is usually necessary to adjust the pH at both stages with an alkaline reagent, preferably sodium carbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate. The glyoxal is preferably used as a 40% by wt. aqueous solution and the formaldehyde as a 30-40% by wt. aqueous solution.

    Abstract: The heat-curable coating agent according to the invention contains a combination of a binder, which possesses basic nitrogen groups and is rendered water-dilutable by protonation with an acid, and a crosslinking agent and, if required, pigments, fillers, corrosion inhibitors, surface coating assistants and catalysts, and the binder used is a reaction product of a dicarboxylic acid or of a dicarboxylate or of a (meth)acrylate oligomer or polymer with an adduct of a di- or triglycidyl ether and a polyamine, the polyamine containing 2 or more amine nitrogen atoms per molecule and one or more alkylene chains of 3 or more carbon atoms between the amino groups, and has an NH amine number of from 50 to 150 mg of KOH/g and is combined with aminoplasts and/or phenoplasts as crosslinking agents. The novel coating agent is useful as a binder for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.
