Abstract: In the prepn. of aromatic ureas of formula (I) contg. a thioether or sulphonyl gp. by reacting a phenylurea of formula (II) with an amine formula (III) at 80-180 deg C, opt. in the presence of an inert diluent, reaction is carried out in the presence of H3PO3, a 1-4C alkyl phosphite or PPh3 as catalyst: A-N(R4)-CO-N(R5)-L-S(O)n-C2H4-Z (I); A-N(R4)-CO-NH2 (II); R5HN-L-S(O)n-C2H4-Z (III); n = 0 or 2; A = phenyl with 0-3 substits. selected from 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, halogen, OH, HOSO2, COOH, CN, NO2, 2-4C alkanoylamino and 1-4C alkoxycarbonylamino; R4, R5 = H, 1-4C alkyl or Ph; L = 2-4C alkylene, opt. with an ether O, imino or N-(1-4C alkyl)-imino gp. in the chain; or NR5-L = a piperazino-ethylene gp.; Z = OH or a gp. which is labile under alkaline conditions; ring A may have an annelated benzene ring.

Abstract: Diaminothiophenes of the formula or tautomers thereof, where R1 and R2 are each hydrogen or together are where T1 is hydrogen, alkyl or phenyl, T2 and T3 are, independently of one another, alkyl or phenyl, or T2 and T3 together with the nitrogen linking them are a heterocyclic radical, R3 is substituted amino and R4 is alkanoyl, benzoyl, cyano, nitro or where T4 is hydrogen, alkyl or phenyl and T5 is the radical of a primary amine or of an active methylene compound, are prepared as described. The present diaminothiophene compound is useful in the synthesis of dyes, crop protection agents and pharmaceuticals.
