Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new methine or azamethine dye having a specified structural formula, being useful for dip-dyeing or printing of synthetic material, and being excellent in compatibility with binders, stability in a printing ink, image stability, etc. SOLUTION: This dye is represented by the structural formula I [wherein X is N or CH; R is desirably a group derived from an (un)substituted derivative based on benzene, indole, quinoline, naphthalene, pyrrole, thiazole, benzimidazole, benzothiazole, thiophene or pyridine; R is desirably CN; R is desirably an alkyl optionally substituted by a cycloalkyl, an aryl, an alkoxyl, a halogen, NO2 or COOH and/or optionally interrupted by 1-3 O atoms]. It is exemplified by one represented by formula II. It can be produced by reacting a compound represented by formula III with a compound represented by the formula: R -CH2 - CH=CH-CHO or the formula: R -CH2 -CH=NH to form a compound represented by formula I (wherein X is CH or N).
