    Abstract: Solid block alkaline detergent compositions are disclosed comprising a source of alkalinity, and other detergent additives including sequestrants. The solid block detergents of the invention used a mixed inorganic and organic sequestrant composition that successfully softens service water used in manufacturing aqueous detergents from the composition, but also obtains substantially improved organic soil removal on dishware or flatware. The solid block detergents of the invention comprise large masses of the chemical ingredients having a weight of greater than about 500 grams in a solid block product format that is typically dispensed using a spray on water dispenser that creates an aqueous concentrate that is used in a washing machine.

    Abstract: The invention provides a process for preparing a highly alkaline, solid cleaning composition in a batch or continuous mixing system, at or below the melting temperature of the alkaline ingredients, and products produced by the process. Preferably, the ingredients are processed in an extruder, and the mixture is extruded directly into a mold or other packaging system for dispensing the cleaning composition. The consistency of the product ranges from that of a fused block solid to a malleable product. The highly alkaline cleaning compositions are useful for warewashing and cleaning hard surfaces, rinsing, sanitizing, deodorizing, laundry detergents, and the like.

    Abstract: Aqueous bleach solutions can be made by directing a spray of water onto a bulk or shaped solid (brick, tablet, block, etc.) comprising a continuoussolid phase of an encapsulated source of an active halogen bleach or a solid comprising a source of an oxidizing active halogen bleach, and an encapsulated oxidizing halogen bleach source. Such shaped solids can be used to dispense uniform quantities of an aqueous bleach concentrate to bleaching locus such as a washing machine. The tablets can be made from the encapsulated bleach or from a powder mixture of a particulate, granulated or powdered unencapsulated source of active oxidizing bleach and an encapsulated source of active oxidizingbleach by forming the powder mixture into a desired shape. Such a shaped solid bleach can be packaged in a container and can then be contacted with an aqueous spray in a dispenser to create a solution of active bleach for cleaning bleaching processes. The presence of the encapsulate in the solid with the powder reduces the tendency of the solid to absorb water which can be wicked through the solid to pass water through the solid into adjacent solids. Substantial proportions of absorbed water can cause the tablets to crack, crumble and to periodically dispense uneven, substantially large and undesirable concentrationsof active bleach into a wash or bleach cycle. Such large amounts of halogen can cause corrosion of metal machine or dispenser parts, clothing damage, can cause pinholing or other fabric damage, can result in color loss or change, or can result in other undesirable effects in either the dispenser, washing machineor the cleaned item.

    Abstract: The invention includes a process for manufacturing an improved solid cast alkaline composition, that includes (a) reacting an alkali metal silicate with an alkali metal hydroxide of the formula MOH, where M is an alkali metal, in an aqueous environment to form a reaction product; and (b) solidifying the reaction product in a mold where the reaction product is formed and solidified at room temperature without the addition of externally supplied heat and the reaction product solidifies without the use of external cooling; and where the relative amount of alkali metal silicate, alkali metal hydroxide and water incorporated into the composition are effective for producing a reaction product having about 20 to 50 parts water per 100 parts of a combination of the alkali metal silicate, the alkali metal hydroxide and water in the cast solid composition and an M2O:SiO2 ratio of about 2.5:1 to 4.0:1 and M is an alkali metal; and where the process does not result in the deactivation of desirable operative cleaning components.
