Abstract: PURPOSE:To eliminate the occurrence of optical defects such as distortion, blur and the like of optical fibers in the peripheral part of the end face of an optical fiber bundle for image transmission by forming the peripheral part of said fiber bundle of light absorptive fibers. CONSTITUTION:Strip-shaped fiber aggregate 22 is formed by using optical fibers 12 such as multicore optical fibers. This aggregate 22 is put in dies, by which it is pressurized, compressed and secured, to make an integral optical fiber bundle. At this time, the optical fibers 31 in the area of the peripheral part of the optical fiber bundle is formed of the light absorptive fibers formed by adding a small amount of ferric oxide or the like. Since this area of the light absorptive fibers is not used for image transmission, the problem of the degradation in the quality of image transmission on account of the deformation, disordered configuration, etc. of the optical fibers in the image transmission area is eliminated. Undesired light is absorbed in the light absorptive fiber area, and therefore the sharp light image free from distortions is transmitted and is taken out.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent transmitted light leaking from a cladding layer from being incident to adjacent cladding layers by forming preform rod by making a reaction pipe solid, by bonding a glass layer, absorbing unnecessary light, around its outer circumference, and by heating and elongating a bundle of many preform rods. CONSTITUTION:In a quartz reaction pipe, a cladding glass layer and core glass layer are formed in an impact vapor-phase chemical reacting method, etc., and then the quartz pipe is heated to form a preform rod for the formation of optical fibers made solid. Next, the reaction pipe constituting the outer circumference is polished to the core diameter of the final optical fiber. Next, while the preform rod is rotated, a soot for the formation of glass absorbing unnecessary transmitted light leaking from the cladding layer is boned to its outer wall. Consequently, the optical fiber having the layer absorbing the unnecessary transmitted light can easily be obtained and images of good resolution can be transmitted.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily manufacture a glass fiber for optical transmission with a small transmission loss by introducing chlorine gas or a gaseous chlorine compound into a multiple quartz crucible, heat treating the crucible, filling glass rods, and melt spinning the rods into a fiber. CONSTITUTION:Prior to introducing a core forming glass rod and a clad forming glass rod into a quartz crucible for spinning, the whole crucible is heated with heating furnaces 5A, 5B. When the heating temp. reaches about 1,400-1,450 deg.C, chlorine gas or thionyl chloride is introduced from core glass rod introduction hole 14 and clad glass rod introduction hole 15, and heat treatment is carried out for about 1hr. Thus, hydroxyl groups contained in the crucible are diffused, leach out of the inner surface, react with Cl2 or SOCl2, forming HCl, S02 and 02, which are removed. The glass rods are then introduced into the crucible thus heat treated, and a high quality glass fiber for optical transmission is obtd. by spinning.

Abstract: PURPOSE:The title device designed to manufacture high-quality optical fibers of uniform dimension, wherein the glass is remolten in a U-shaped conduit between the melting and the spinning crucibles for a given time to prevent the devitrification of glass and to maintain the pressure applied to the nozzle constant. CONSTITUTION:The preform rods 1 and 2 are molten in the melting crucibles 3 and 4 by the heating furnace 7, kept by the U-shaped conduits 5 and 6 at a high temperature for a given time, and spun through the crucible 8 into fibers. The furnace 7 is kept at a higher temperature then that of the heating furnace 9 to prevent devitrification during the spinning. The contamination of impurities can be prevented by the almost airtight structure between the crucibles 3 and 4 and the double crucible 8. The heating time is controlled by the inside diameters of the conduits 5 and 6 and the crucibles 3 and 4, and the head H. The molten glass surface is controlled to maintain the pressure applied to the nozzle almost constant.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a glass body of high grade and homogeneous quality by turning the glass forming compound formed through vapor phase chemical reaction to molten glass and letting this flow out from a specific vessel to allow the same to cool and solidify. CONSTITUTION:The glass forming compound formed through vapor phase chemical reaction is turned to molten glass in the first crucible not illustrated. This glass material is filled in the second crucible 5 which penetrates in the cover 4 for electric furnace covering the top of the quarts tube 2 in an electric furnace 1. Q2 gas 13 flows in the crucible 5 under higher pressure than atmospheric pressure through the cover 6 with an influent tube and flows out like an arrow 13a. When the support bar 8 whose top end face is in contact with the effluent port 7 of the crucible 5 is gradually lowered in the perpendicular direction like an arrow A without rotating by an elevator 9, the molten glass material 10 flows out through the effluent port 7 and is cooled by the inert gas 14 which is flown in through influent pipe 3 under pressure higher than atomospheric pressure and flows out like an arrow 14a, thus becoming a bar form glass body 11.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To apply easily a reinforcing metal cover to the outer peripheral surface of optical fiber for light transmission, by constituting a metal covering crucible of the horizontally long type putting a metal covering material in the inside equipped with a hole through which a wire material is passed.
CONSTITUTION: In the metal covering crucible 21 constituting the nucleus of a device for covering an optical fiber with a metal, the height of the liquid level of the metal covering material 26 put in it is always kept at a fixed height, and the crucible has a closed type structure wherein the horizontal length is longer than the depth of the material to secure sufficiently the capacity of the material put in it. When the rod 28 of the metal covering material is fed to the feed pipe 24 for the covering material by the material transporting mechanism 27, melted under heating by the furnace 25, and the melted metal covering material 26 is always put in the crucible 21, the height of the liquid level of the metal covering material 26 in the crucible 21 can be always kept at constant. Since the face where the metal covering material 26 is in contact with the atmosphere is only the feed part of the covering material, the metal covering material 26 in the crucible 21 will not irreversibly flow out of the hole 23 from which a wire material is passed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve resolution and the brightness of an image by bundling optical fibers each of which is coated with a remeltable layer because of its lower melting point than that of an optical fiber core and heating and melting only the end part of the coated layer to make the area of the end surface reduce. CONSTITUTION:Coating fibers 7 each of which has a coating layer 6 consisting of a remeltable material with lower melting point than that of an optical fibers core 1 such as In, Sn and nylon are laminated on the cores 1. If these fibers 7 are heated by a heating means so that the coating layers 6 of adjacent fibers 7 are melted and these cores 1 are adhered mutually, the optical fiber cores 1 are adhered at their end parts 8 as shown in the drawing and spaces 9 of the laminated cores 1 are filled with the melted coating material 6 as adhesive. In an area B except the end part, the coating fibers 7 are not adhered but are separated, so that the coating fibers 7 has flexibility.
