Abstract: There is provided a device for partitioning a liquefied sample into discrete volumes. The device includes a bottom member; a top member disposed adjacent the bottom member; and at least one channel member disposed between the top and bottom members. The at least one channel member is at least partially defined by the top and bottom members and has first and second end portions. The first end portion of the at least one channel has an opening to receive liquid and the second end portion of the at least one channel has a reaction compartment and a vent opening. Accordingly, when the liquefied sample is introduced to the first end portion, capillary action assists in causing the liquefied sample to travel from the first end portion to the second end portion and at least a portion of the liquefied sample is caused to remain in the reaction compartment.

Abstract: This discloses a device for partitioning a liquefied sample into discrete volumes comprising: a bottom member 110 having a number of discrete reaction compartments 122; a sample receiving well 118 disposed in the bottom member 110; a top member 112 disposed adjacent to the bottom member 110 and a number of channels 120 which are at least partially defined by at least one of the top 112 and bottom members 110, each channel 120 having a first end portion in direct fluid communication with the sample receiving well 118 and a second end portion in direct fluid communication with a respective discrete reaction compartment 122; an overflow well 124 in direct fluid communication with each of the discrete reaction compartments 122; and a vent opening. When the liquefied sample is introduced to the sample receiving well 118, capillary action assists in causing the liquefied sample to travel from the first end portion to the second end portion of the channel, where at least a portion of the liquefied sample is subsequently partitioned into and remains in the discrete reaction compartment 122.

Abstract: The present invention provides devices and methods for determining the presence or absence of pathogens in a biological sample and for the concurre nt determination of the antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogens present. The devices and methods of the present invention are able to make the determinations without pre-selection of target bacteria. Instead, all organisms from the sample are applied to the device. In wells where one or more antimicrobial agents are present only pathogens resistant to the antimicrobial agent grow. This allows the user to determine the presence of target pathogens and concurrently determine the resistance patterns of the organisms without the need to subculture the organisms. The present inventio n also provides methods of performing a business service of performing the determinations described above, and kits containing the devices and descriptions of the methods.

Abstract: Method and assay devices for the detection of the presence or amount of biological material, analyte(s), or microorganism(s) in a sample. The method includes the steps of liquefying the sample (if necessary) and distributing the liquefied sample over the surface of the assay device. The device may comprise an incubation plate, a dip stick device, or other devices. The devices have at least one reagent provided within the devices. Some devices have a generally flat horizontal surface which is divided into a plurality of recessed wells. Others have one or more surfaces with reagent island(s) immobilized thereon. Each well or reagent island is adapted to hold an aliquot of liquid. The wells or reagent islands are sized and shaped, and formed of a suitable material, to hold the aliquot within the well or reagent island by surface tension. Any excess liquid from the liquefied sample is drained from the surface of the device. The method then involves incubating the assay device until the presence or amount of the biological material, analyte, or microorganism is determined.

Abstract: A self-contained incubator for growth of microorganism kit and methods for use of such a kit are provided. The kit and methods may detect the presence of microorganisms and may utilize a microorganism growth and indicator medium provided in a sample container along with a heat source, preferably generating heat through chemical means, and optionally heat shields, allowing for on-site testing of a microorganism present in a sample. The sample container may also include a removable vessel cap that includes a barrier separating the sample from a material capable of disinfecting the sample, thereby preventing contact of the sample and the material for a desired time period. The vessel cap may also be used independently in other applications.
