Abstract: A solid acid catalyst with a with very high activity and high stability in a variety of organic reaction systems. A solid acid catalyst (I) comprising a structure (A) resulting from the removal of a hydrogen atom from at least one hydroxy group in an inorganic phosphorus acid, a structure (B) resulting from the removal of a hydrogen atom from at least one OH group in an organic phosphorus acid of formulae R -P(=O)(R )-OH (1) or R -P(R )-OH (2), and (C) at least one aluminum, gallium and/or iron atom. R , R = R, OR, OH or H, with the proviso that at least one of these groups is R or OR; R = 1-22C organic group Independent claims are also included for: (i) production of esters from starting esters or acids and alcohols using catalyst (I); (ii) production of ketals or acetals from ketones or aldehydes and alcohols using catalyst (I); and (iii) production of (I).

Abstract: A copper-containing hydrogenation reaction catalyst is prepared by reducing a precursor of a copper-containing catalyst usable in hydrogenation reaction with hydrogen gas or a mixture of hydrogen and an inert gas by liquid phase reduction in a stream of a solvent in the temperature range of from 50 to 140 DEG C. An alcohol is produced using the catalyst thus obtained in a fixed bed continuous reaction system.

Date Jul. 27, 1995A method for preparing a copper-containing hydrogenation reaction catalyst includes the step of reducing a formed precursor of a copper-containing hydrogenation reaction catalyst with hydrogen gas or a mixture of hydrogen and inert gas by liquid phase reduction in a stream of a solvent. The reductive activation is carried out by the two steps of performing the first stage of liquid phase reduction by which the catalyst precursor is activated in the temperature range of from 20 DEG to 140 DEG C. so that at least 10% by weight of the copper oxide contained in the catalyst precursor can be reduced by the time when the temperature passes 140 DEG C., and then performing the second stage of liquid phase reduction by which the catalyst precursor is further activated in the temperature range of from 140 DEG to 250 DEG C. The catalyst thus obtained has markedly improved catalytic activity and selectivity. An alcohol of high quality can be obtained at a high productivity using the catalyst in a fixed bed continuous reaction system.
