    Abstract: The present invention provides a process for producing a highly pure phytosterol, at high yield in particular, by an easy treatment from a crude fatty acid ester derived from a vegetable fat and/or oil. That is, the present invention provides a process for producing phytosterol, which comprises (A) bringing a crude fatty acid product derived from a vegetable fat and/or oil including phytosterol into contact with a mixed solvent of an organic solvent and water to crystallize the phytosterol and separating the crystals from the mixed solvent; or (B) mixing a crude fatty acid ester derived from a vegetable fat and/or oil including the phytosterol and a fatty acid ester with a lower alcohol, allowing the mixture to stand at a temperature of 1 to 40° C. to precipitate crystals including the fatty acid ester and separating the crystals to take the lower alcohol solution including the phytosterol.

    Abstract: A hydrogenation reaction catalyst precursor of the present invention comprises a catalyst carrier (A) and a metal oxide composition (B) carried on or mixed with the catalyst carrier (A) at a weight ratio of (B)/(A) = 15/85 to 65/35; the catalyst carrier (A) comprising a carrier base material of silica, alumina silica-alumina, magnesia, zirconia, zeolite or diatomaceous earth, and a coating of titanium oxide and/or titanium hydroxide, the metal oxide composition (B) comprising copper oxide, zinc oxide, and at least one oxide of a metal selected from the group consisting of an element of group IIa of the periodic table, an element of group IIIb of the table, a lantanide element, and an actinide element at a weight ratio of 100/(0 to 25)/(0 to 25). A hydrogenation reaction catalyst with a high catalytic activity and a high reaction selectivity is obtained by reduction of the hydrogenation reaction catalyst precursor. By the use of the hydrogenation reaction catalyst of the present invention, a high quality alcohol can be produced at a high yield and with a high selectivity even at a low reaction temperature and a low hydrogen pressure.

    Abstract: A process for producing desulfurized fats and oils or fatty acid esters is disclosed, which comprises treating fats and oils or fatty acid esters under hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and an inert gas atmosphere at a pressure of from 0.1 to 500 kg/cm2 in the absolute pressure at a temperature of from 100 DEG to 350 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst of the following formula (I): CuxXxxYyxOz(I) wherein all symbols are defined in the disclosure. A process for producing an alcohols using desulfurized fats and oils or fatty acid esters is also disclosed. According to the process for producing an alcohol of the present invention, an alcohol of a high purity and good qualities can efficiently and effectively be produced.

Date Jul. 27, 1995A method for preparing a copper-containing hydrogenation reaction catalyst includes the step of reducing a formed precursor of a copper-containing hydrogenation reaction catalyst with hydrogen gas or a mixture of hydrogen and inert gas by liquid phase reduction in a stream of a solvent. The reductive activation is carried out by the two steps of performing the first stage of liquid phase reduction by which the catalyst precursor is activated in the temperature range of from 20 DEG to 140 DEG C. so that at least 10% by weight of the copper oxide contained in the catalyst precursor can be reduced by the time when the temperature passes 140 DEG C., and then performing the second stage of liquid phase reduction by which the catalyst precursor is further activated in the temperature range of from 140 DEG to 250 DEG C. The catalyst thus obtained has markedly improved catalytic activity and selectivity. An alcohol of high quality can be obtained at a high productivity using the catalyst in a fixed bed continuous reaction system.
