The gelling is particularly pronounced when an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal containing composition is present in the lubricating oil or the fuel. The present invention deals with this particular problem by introducing a hydrocarbon-soluble or dispersible polycarboxylic acid to the fuel and oil mixture.

Abstract: Lubricant compositions are disclosed which comprise (A) at least one neutral or basic metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound, wherein the metal in the salt is magnesium, barium or a mixture thereof, and (B) optionally at least one hydrocarbyl-substituted ashless dispersant in which each hydrocarbyl substituent has a number average molecular weight up to about 1500, provided that the compositions contain no more than 0.06 weight percent calcium, not more than 0.5 weight-percent hydrocarbyl-substituted ashless dispersant in which a hydrocarbyl substituent has a number average molecular weight greater than about 1,500, and optionally not more than 0.5 weight-percent of polymeric viscosity improvers such as olefin copolymer, styrene-diene, and/or polymethacrylate viscosity improvers. Additive concentrate formulations for making such lubricant formulations are also disclosed. Methods for lubricating sump-lubricated fuel-injected alcohol-powered internal combustion engines are described which utilize these lubricant compositions to help prevent the formation of deposits in fuel injectors and provide advantageous rust and corrosion inhibition properties. These formulations can also be useful for lubricating combustion engines powered by petroleum- and coal-derived fuels.

Abstract: A lubricating oil composition is described which is useful in spark-ignited engines which may be fueled with gasoline, alcohol, or mixtures of both. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for spark-ignited engines are described which comprise (A) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (B) at least one detergent selected from the group consisting of a basic magnesium salt of an organic acid or a mixture of at least one basic magnesium salt of an organic acid and another alkaline earth metal salt of an organic acid wherein the metal in the mixture is predominantly magnesium; and (C) at least one metal salt of (C-1) a substituted succinic acid acylated polyamine; or (C-2) a hydrocarbon-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid containing at least one hydroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring, provided that the metal of said metal salt (C) is not calcium or magnesium. Lubricants primarily useful for lubricating alcohol-fueled, spark-ignited engines also are described which comprise (A) a lubricating oil, (B) a detergent as described above, and (D) at least one carboxylic acid derivative composition useful as a dispersant. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain, and generally do contain other desirable additives such as (E) mixtures of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids; (F) sulfurized olefins; etc. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as "SG".

Abstract: Internal combustion engines exhibit improved efficiency of the emissions control system by using a lubricating oil composition of a base oil, an alkali or alkaline earth metal-containing detergent; a metal salt of one or more phosphorus-containing compounds represented by the formula (I) , wherein X1 and X2 are independently O or S, and R1 and R2 are independently hydrocarbyl groups, the average total number of carbon atoms in R1 and R2 for the one or more phosphorus-containing compounds being at least 10.4; and an acylated nitrogen-containing compound having at least about 10 alphatic carbon atoms and a TBN of at least about 2; the lubricating oil composition being characterized by a phosphorus concentration of up to about 0.12% by weight and the substantial absence of copper, thereby generating a lean-phosphorus containing exhaust gas.

Abstract: Procedimiento de funcionamiento de un motor de combustión interna que comprende un accionamiento de válvula, equipado con un dispositivo de tratamiento posterior de gas de escape, comprendiendo dicho procedimiento: (A) hacer funcionar dicho motor utilizando un combustible normalmente líquido o gaseoso; (B) lubricar los componentes de dicho accionamiento de válvula utilizando un lubricante de película sólido; (C) lubricar dicho motor, incluyendo dichos componentes de dicho accionamiento de válvula, utilizando una composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo, conteniendo opcionalmente dicha composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo un aditivo de extrema presión compuesto por metal y fósforo, siempre que la cantidad de fósforo aportada a dicha composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo por dicho aditivo de extrema presión no supere el 0,08% en peso basado en el peso de dicha composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo; (D) retirar parte de dicha composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo de dicho motor, combinándose dicha parte retirada de dicha composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo con dicho combustible y consumiéndose con dicho combustible a medida que se hace funcionar dicho motor; y (E) añadir una cantidad adicional de dicha composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo a dicho motor para sustituir dicha parte retirada de dicha composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo, en el que dicha composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo presenta un contenido en fósforo que no supera el 0,08% en peso y en el que durante la etapa (D) dicha parte retirada de dicha composición de aceite lubricante libre de fósforo o de bajo contenido en fósforo se introduce en dicha composición de combustible en el tanque de combustible, la tubería de retorno de combustible, los inyectores de combustible, el colector de admisión, el sistema de ventilación del cárter positivo, el sistema de recirculación de gas de escape o el sistema de admisión de aire del motor.

Abstract: Procedimiento de lubricación de un motor de combustión interna y de mejora de la eficiencia del sistema de control de emisiones del motor, estando provisto el sistema de control de emisiones de un dispositivo de postratamiento secundario de tratamiento de gases de escape que contiene catalizador, comprendiendo el procedimiento: (A) seleccionar una composición de aceite lubricante que comprende: un aceite base, un detergente que contiene metal alcalino o alcalino-térreo, una sal metálica de uno o más compuestos que contienen fósforo representados por la fórmula: (Ver fórmula) en la que en la fórmula (I), X 1 y X 2 son independientemente O o S, y R 1 y R 2 son independientemente grupos hidrocarbilo, siendo el número total medio de átomos de carbono por fracción de fósforo-conminina de por lo menos 10,4, en la que por lo menos uno de los grupos R 1 y R 2 en una o más de las sales metálicas que contienen fósforo contiene 4 o menos átomos de carbono y hasta 40 por ciento de la totalidad de los grupos R 1 y R 2 suministrados por la sal metálica que contiene fósforo contiene 4 o menos átomos de carbono; y un compuesto que contiene nitrógeno acilado que presenta por lo menos 10 átomos de carbono alifático y un TBN de por lo menos 2; estando caracterizada la composición de aceite lubricante porque presenta una concentración de fósforo de hasta 0,12% en peso y la ausencia sustancial de cobre, (B) añadir la composición de aceite lubricante al motor; (C) accionar el motor, (D) generar un gas de escape pobre en fósforo; y (E) poner en contacto el catalizador en el dispositivo de postratamiento de gases de escape con el gas de escape pobre en fósforo.
