    Abstract: Apparatus and a method for routing packets having destination addresses in their header. The routing modules of the router are of two types: simple routing modules which can only route packets whose destination address is stored in a limited memory of the module for storing corresponding output port addresses, and default modules which are used to find the identity of an output port for routing all other packets received by the simple routing modules of the router. Advantageously, the processing load of the simple routing modules is smoothed because these modules do not have to perform the complex searching functions required to find destination addresses not readily accessible in their memory. Advantageously, the single or small number of default routing modules can have sophisticated memory and processor facilities for searching over a very large number of destination addresses and for concentrating the process of sending queries to other routers for additional information.

    Abstract: The priority and security encoding system for electronic mail messages functions to ascribe a message characterization code to the electronic mail message that enables the router as well as the destination message server to more efficiently process the electronic mail message, based upon the message characterization code. The message characterization code is assigned by the message originator, or the message server that serves the message originator, to identify the nature of the electronic mail message. The message characterization code can be defined to denote any one or more message related factors, such as: message content, identification of the message originator, identification of the message recipient, or other message processing factors. The message characterizing code is used by the message routers, network nodes, and destination message server to prioritize the processing of electronic mail messages and optionally provide subscriber defined alternate routing of certain classes of messages. This message characterizing code can also be used to automatically initiate various electronic message security measures to safeguard the most sensitive classes of messages, without the need for subscriber intervention.

    Abstract: A network resource server is deployed in a convergent telecommunications network for providing traditionally service circuit type applications to both circuit switches and packet switches of the convergent network. The network resource server includes a variety of processors for accommodating specific application requests from nodes within the convergent network. Advantageously, the network resource server has a greater capacity than traditional service circuit nodes and is able to serve both the circuit-based network elements and packet-based network elements in a convergent network. For this reason, the network resource server eliminates the need for traditional service circuit nodes and various types of data servers.
