    Abstract: An optical device for routing a plurality of optical signals between a fir st port and a second port is disclosed. The optical device includes a mirror array having a plurality of reflective elements. Each optical input signal is directed by a reflective element in a direction designated by a control signal. The optica l device further includes a curved mirror for receiving each directed optical signal from the respective reflective element, and for reflecting each directed optical sign al to the first or second port.

    Abstract: A micro-electro-mechanical (MEM] optical device having a reduced footprint f or increasing yield on a substrate. The MEM device includes an optical element having an outer edge and supported by a support structure disposed on a substrate. The support structure is mechanically connected to the substrate through first and secon d pairs of beams which move the structure to an active position for elevating the optic device above the substrate. When in an elevated position, the optical device can be selectively tilted for deflecting optic signals. The beams are connected at one end to the support structure, at the other end to the substrate and are disposed so that the first and second bea m ends are located proximate the optical device outer edge. In a preferred embodiment, a stiction force reducing element is included on the outer edge of the optical device f or reducing the contact area between the optic device edge and the substrate.

    Abstract: A communication system adapted to use wavelength (frequency) division multiplexing for quantum-key distribution (QKD). In one embodiment, a communication system of the invention has a transmitter coupled to a receive r via a transmission link. The transmitter has (i) a first optical-frequency comb source (OFCS) adapted to generate a first plurality of uniformly spaced frequency components and (ii) a first multi-channel optical modulator adapte d to independently modulate each component of the first plurality to produce a quantum-information (QI) signal applied to the transmission link. The receiv er has (i) a second OFCS adapted to generate a second plurality of uniformly spaced frequency components and (ii) a second multi-channel optical modulato r adapted to independently modulate each component of the second plurality to produce a local- oscillator (LO) signal. Each of the first and second optica l- frequency comb sources is referenced to a frequency standard such that the frequency components generated by these comb sources have substantially the same frequencies. The receiver employs a multi channel homodyne detector adapted to process interference signals produced by combining the LO signal with the QI signal to ascertain quantum information carried by the QI signal .

    Abstract: In a system and method of optical communication, optical signals are generated in multiple wavelength channels. Each optical signal is passively transported from an origination node of a network to a destination node. The destination node is determined by the signal wavelength. For at least some signals, the passive transport includes transport through a branch point of the network, such that the signal wavelenth determines the output branch through which the signal is routed. In certain embodiments, signals are generated according to a schedule devised to substantially prevent the concurrent arrival, at the same destination node, of signals having the same wavelength but coming from different origination nodes.

    Abstract: An opto-isolator incorporating a MEMS device includes an optical signal source and an optical signal detector defining therebeween an optical path for communication of optical signals. A MEMS device having an actuator for controlling a moveable element is disposed between the source and detector for manipulating the optical signals. In one embodiment, the moveable element is a shutter which is operable to selectively allow optical signals to be received by the detector and prevent signals from being detected. In another embodiment, the moveable member is a MEMS tilt mirror for selectively directing optical signals to the detecto r.
