    Abstract: A color CRT has an inline electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams toward a screen, the gun including a main focus lens formed by two spaced electrodes (40, 42) each having three separate inline apertures (58,60,62;64,66,68) and a peripheral rim (70,72), the apertured portion of each electrode being within a recess (54,56) set back from the rim, 15 wherein the main focus lens electrode (42) closest to the screen includes a slot (95) e.g. formed by two strips (96,98), on the side facing the screen, the slot extending in the direction of the three electron beam paths and includes means for providing a weaker stigmator effect on the two side beams than on the center beam. As shown in Figure 5 the ends of the strips (96, 98) may be tapered, or curved or the strips shortened, to provide the weaker stigmator effect. Alternatively, Figures 9 and 10 (not shown), the slot is dogboned in shape and located in a bracket (102) attached to an apertured plate (52), in turn attached to the screen side of the main focus lens electrode closest to the screen.

    Abstract: The assembly (Fig. 3) has a trio of inline cathodes (21), a first grid (G1, 23) positioned adjacent the cathodes and a second grid (G2, 25) positioned between the first grid and a first focussing electrode (G3, 27). Each grid and electrode has a trio of inline apertures aligned with the cathodes. A common, assymmetric focussing lens is, in use, established between the first focussing electrode (G3) and a second focussing electrode (G4, 29). The lens has a maximum transverse dimension in a first direction parallel to the plane of the inline apertures greater than its maximum transverse dimension in a second orthogonal direction. In order that the cross-section of each electron beam has a greater dimension in the first direction than in the second direction at the beam- entrance of the lens, there is a slotted structure (Fig. 7, 68) associated with said first (23) grid interposing a rectangular slot (68) between each aperture (64) of the first grid and the aligned aperture of the second grid. The long dimension of the rectangle is in the second direction in the first grid (23).

    Abstract: In a colour display tube with a self-convergent deflection yoke and in-line gun assembly, the beams are predistorted by asymmetric beam passage apertures in electrode 23 (and see Fig. 7) before entering the main focusing lens formed between electrodes 27 and 29, which have recessed apertures common to the three beams at their juxtaposed ends, the recesses being respectively of racetrack (Fig. 4) and dogbone (Fig. 5) shape, and such that the major transverse dimension of the lens exceeds three times the spacing between adjacent apertures in each electrode 27 and 29, and the spacing between adjacent beams does not exceed 200 mils in the transverse planes through the deflection centres. The internal diameter of the deflection yoke at the exit end of its windows is less than 30 mils per degree of the deflection angle defined by diagonally opposed corners of the raster. A formula for envelope shape is disclosed (Figures 11 and 12).

    Abstract: The present invention relates to an improvement in a color picture tube having an inline electron gun, for generating and directing a plurality of electron beams along coplanar paths toward a screen of the tube. The gun includes a main focus lens for focusing the electron beams. The improvement comprises a change in the two spaced gun electrodes that form the main focus lens. Each electrode includes a plurality of apertures therein equal to the number of electron beams. Each electrode also includes a peripheral rim with the peripheral rims of the two electrodes facing each other. The apertured portion of each electrode is located within a recess set back from the rim. The recess has substantially straight wall sections parallel to the paths of the electron beams.

    Abstract: The gun, for use in a television picture tube, comprises a cathode, an apertured control grid, and an apertured screen grid aligned in the order named. The screen grid aperture comprises a rectangular slot portion facing the control grid and a circular portion facing away from the control grid. The slot portion of the aperture, which has a width 2-5 times its depth, creates an astigmatic field that produces underconvergence of the electron beam in the vertical plane only, whereby to avoid and/or compensate for vertical flare distortion of the beam spot at off-center positions on the image screen.
